Nach Nottingham 2007, Amsterdam 2011, Lucca 2015, Dornbirn 2019 findet vom 07.-10. September 2023 die fünfte Bloodbowl Weltmeisterschaft statt. Dieses Mal im schönen Alicante.

Auch wenn ich seit einigen Jahren kaum noch auf Turniere fahre, ist Bloodbowl eine meiner großen Leidenschaften. Bisher habe ich keine Weltmeisterschaft verpasst. Meistens spiele ich kurz vorher ein paar Spiele, um wieder reinzukommen.

Laut Anmeldeliste werden in Alicante 2.234 Coaches antreten. Das ist ein absoluter Rekord. Die IFA Halle wird sicherlich erbeben, wenn an über 1.000 Tischen gleichzeitig die Würfelbecher knallen.

Da der World Cup für mich ein ganz besonderes Event sein wird, dachte ich mir ich lasse Euch an dieser Erfahrung teilhaben.

Es wird also die kommenden Tage mal mehr oder weniger lange Berichte zum Event und meinen Spielen geben.

Ich bin gespannt, ob ich es schaffe im Eifer des Gefechts auch genügend Fotos zu machen.

After Nottingham 2007, Amsterdam 2011, Lucca 2015, Dornbirn 2019, the fifth Bloodbowl World Cup will take place from 07-10 September 2023. This time in beautiful Alicante.

Even though I have hardly been going to tournaments for a few years now, Bloodbowl is one of my great passions. So far, I have never missed a World Championship. I usually play a few games just beforehand to get back into it.

According to the registration list, 2,234 coaches will compete in Alicante. That is an absolute record. The IFA Hall will surely shake when the dice cups are banging at more than 1,000 tables at the same time.

Since the World Cup will be a very special event for me, I thought I would share this experience with you.

So there will be more or less long reports about the event and my games in the coming days.

I'm curious whether I'll manage to take enough photos in the heat of the moment.

Was ist Bloodbowl?

Bloodbowl ist ein Fantasy Football Tabletop von Games Workshop. Es spielt in der Warhammer Fantasy Welt.

Wie im American Football ist es das Ziel den Ball in die gegnerische Endzone zu tragen, und so einen Touchdown zu erzielen. Es gewinnt, wer mehr Touchdowns macht, als der Gegner.

Da enden dann aber auch schon die Gemeinsamkeiten mit dem American Football. Denn je nach dem, welche Rasse man spielt, geht es bei Bloodbowl nicht nur um den Ball, sondern auch darum, dass gegnerische Team sprichwörtlich vom Platz zu fegen.

Gerade Rassen wie Chaos, Untote oder Orks gewinnen ihre Spiele auch gerne nur 1:0 oder 2:1, eliminieren auf dem Weg aber das gegnerische Team. Elfen dagegen haben am Ende wahrscheinlich nur noch (kleine) Teile des Teams auf dem Platz, im Vorfeld aber hoffentlich eine ordentliche Führung erspielt.

Dank der 29 verschiedenen Rassen, die auf der Weltmeisterschaft spielbar sind, ist für jeden Geschmack und jede Spielstärke etwas dabei.

Dabei hat jede Rasse verschiedene Spieler, mit eigenen Stärken, Schwächen und Fähigkeiten. Spielt man Bloodbowl in einer Liga erhalten die Spieler, so sie überleben, mit der Zeit Erfahrungspunkte und weitere Fähigkeiten.

Bei einem Turnier ist dies anders. Um Chancengleichheit herzustellen, werden hier werden alle Spieler nach jeder Runde geheilt. Jeder Coach kann einigen seiner Spieler im Vorfeld Fähigkeiten geben und so das eigene Team noch stärker auf den eigenen Spielstil ausrichten.

Hier zum Beispiel mein Team, die Darmstadt Dead Diamonds.

What is Bloodbowl?

Bloodbowl is a fantasy football tabletop by Games Workshop. It is set in the Warhammer Fantasy world.

Like in American football, the goal is to carry the ball into the opponent's end zone and score a touchdown. The winner is the one who scores more touchdowns than the opponent.

But that's where the similarities with American football end. Depending on which race you play, Bloodbowl is not only about the ball, but also about literally sweeping the opposing team off the field.

Especially races like Chaos, Undead or Orcs like to win their games only 1:0 or 2:1, but eliminate the opposing team along the way. Elves, on the other hand, will probably only have (small) parts of the team left on the pitch at the end, but hopefully have gained a decent lead beforehand.

Thanks to the 29 different races playable at the World Cup, there is something for every taste and skill level.

Each race has different players, with their own strengths, weaknesses and abilities. If you play Bloodbowl in a league, the players, if they survive, receive experience points and further abilities over time.

In a tournament this is different. To create equal opportunities, all players are healed after each round. Each coach can give skills to some of his players in advance and thus align his own team even more closely to his own style of play.

Here, for example, is my team, the Darmstadt Dead Diamonds.

Die Rassen wurden im Rahmen der Regeländerungen 2020 überarbeitet. Auch meine geliebten Untoten wurden verändert. Ich hoffe aber, ich komme wie früher gut mit ihnen klar.

Das Team ist eher ausbalanciert. Meine beiden Mumien sind z.B. sehr stark, können sich aber nur sehr langsam bewegen.

Meine Ghoule dagegen sind schnell und können gut mit dem Ball umgehen. Dafür sollten sie besser nicht getackelt werden. Ihre Rüstung ist recht niedrig.

Die Blitzer unterstützen das Team, bzw. machen gezielt Jagd auf gegnernische Schlüsselspieler. Im Notfall können sie auch mit dem Ball umgehen.

Zombies sind reine Lückenfüller.

Das Team hat insgesamt 12 Spieler, von denen maximal 11 gleichzeitig auf dem Feld sein können. Ich habe also einen Ersatzspieler, falls bei mir jemand ausfällt, bzw. falls der Schiedsrichter einen meiner Zombies vom Platz stellt, wenn er einen am Boden liegenden Gegner gefoult hat. Auch sowas kommt bei Bloodbowl hin und wieder vor.

Meine Fähigkeiten

Ich konnte 6 Skills vergeben und habe mich für 3 mal Guard, Tackle, Block und Sure Hands entschieden.

Guard hilft anderen Spielern bei einem Block. Block hilft auf den Füßen zu bleiben, wenn man blockt, oder geblockt wird, und Tackle negiert Dodge beim Gegner. Sure Hands erleichtert meinem Ghoul das Aufheben des Balls und schützt ihn davor, den Ball aus der Hand geschlagen zu bekommen.

Somit wird Nummer 6 wohl mein präferierter Ballträger. Aufgrund der Würfel, werden Pläne in Bloodbowl jedoch häufig durchkreuzt.

Darmstadt Dead Diamonds

The races have been revised as part of the 2020 rule changes. My beloved undead have also been changed. But I hope, I get on well with them as before.

The team is rather balanced. My two mummies, for example, are very strong but can only move very slowly.

My ghouls, on the other hand, are fast and can handle the ball well. For that, they'd better not be tackled. Their armour is quite low.

The blitzers support the team or hunt down key players. In an emergency they can also handle the ball.

Zombies are pure gap fillers.

The team has a total of 12 players, of whom a maximum of 11 can be on the field at the same time. So I have a substitute player if someone drops out, or if the referee sends one of my zombies off the field for fouling an opponent who is lying on the ground. That also happens in Bloodbowl from time to time.

My skills

I was able to assign 6 skills and chose 3 times Guard, Tackle, Block and Sure Hands.

Guard helps other players with a block. Block helps keeping on your feet while blocking or being blocked, and Tackle negates Dodge on the opponent. Sure Hands makes it easier for my Ghoul to pick up the ball and protects him from getting the ball knocked out of his hand.

So number 6 will probably be my preferred ball carrier. Because of the dice, however, plans in Bloodbowl are often thwarted.

Abschluss und Impressionen

Ich freue mich sehr auf dieses Turnier. Am Mittwochvormittag fliegen meine Teamkollegen und ich von Frankfurt nach Valencia, wo wir uns dann mit dem Mietwagen in unsere Unterkunft nach Alicante begeben.

Das wird dann Teil zwei dieser Reihe.

Conclusion and impressions

I am really looking forward to this tournament. On Wednesday morning, my teammates and I will fly from Frankfurt to Valencia, where we will then take a rental car to our accommodation in Alicante.

That will be part two of this series.
