Not from ghost stories, but just from sensibility… it was like standing on an active tarmac or on the lip of a live volcano. Nothing to worry about, so long as you paid attention.

I love the stage this quote sets. I'm enjoying following along.

I liked this one from the parts added

He was glad for the distraction, because there was just something about being on train tracks that summoned a primal caution in his head. Not from ghost stories, but just from sensibility… it was like standing on an active tarmac or on the lip of a live volcano. Nothing to worry about, so long as you paid attention.

“Peh. You know, when I was a lad, we’d do that sorta crap too. But the best times, ladyfriend or no, was when we were making our own adventures. This heat, I tell ya.

This has to be favourite part of the story. It's so true and resonates with me in my childhood. The best times were spontaneous and just going with the flow :D

Summer drained away, marked by the presence of cool winds. The days had been getting shorter for a while, but it was around the time when one really began to notice

Oh, aye. See, the tale gets all cut up and watered down by folks who’d rather a show of it, like you said, to spin up the little ‘uns inta thinkin’ twice about that forest beyond. Make the main event the spook story, and you can go home with a dare done did in your pocket and that’s that. So the real history is lost.”

“Hm?” She looked up, and actually brightened. “Oh, it’s wonderful for keeping the time. Look.”
She held up the screen, which displayed the basic clock app. There were a few different clock faces, complete with ticking second hands.
The server returned. “Credit or debit?” they asked.
“My credit’s good here,” Gabby said, furrowing her brow.

This moment was really unsettling to me. At first I thought she was just acting distant because she was snubbed, but when she started obsessing with the clocks and keeping time - on top of acting weird about credit and prices - it was apparent that something is very wrong. Well written, and you already know that I have a connection with Gabby in a way, so I'm concerned for her.

Really looking forward to finding out if Barton is able to figure out what happened to her and whether he's able to rescue her or not!

He didn’t ask for what. He was fairly sure she didn’t know herself. Barton watched her go, power walking away with a purpose. She reached the street, flinched as a car rolled by, then crossed and walked away.

An abandoned rail line cut east-west through the area north of the campsites—a convenient border that marked the safe zone from the dangerous one. The stories of a phantom train had been around forever, likely spun up and exaggerated through countless retellings around fire pits, the kind low lit with coals and ringed by wide-eyed faces.

Right at the start of your story. But this instantly brings to mind this image.
