Splinterlands Art Contest Week 355! Drawing of a Tokatag conflict
Here is my drawing for this contest week!
Tokatag Conscript is a Common reward card from the Echoes of Rebellion set in Splinterlands. It costs six mana to use and belongs to the Neutral element, meaning it can be placed in almost any lineup regardless of the Splinter chosen by the summoner. At level one, Tokatag Conscript has one ranged attack, two health, and a speed of three. Its standout features are its two abilities: Sneak and Thorns. These abilities work together in a unique way, giving Tokatag Conscript a specific role that is less about direct offense and more about strategic disruption.
The Sneak ability allows Tokatag Conscript to bypass the frontline and target the enemy monster positioned in the back row with the lowest health. This is especially useful in battles where taking out support units quickly can turn the tide of the match. However, what makes Tokatag Conscript truly interesting is that it has Thorns—a defensive ability more commonly seen on melee tanks. Thorns returns damage to any attacker that hits the card with a melee attack. In Tokatag’s case, this makes it a surprising trap for melee Sneak attackers who target the backline. Instead of hitting a soft, easy kill, those attackers take damage in return, potentially eliminating themselves in the process.
Despite this smart synergy, Tokatag Conscript is not without its weaknesses. Its two health at level one makes it very fragile. Even though it can retaliate with Thorns, it may not survive long enough to deliver more than one or two hits in most standard scenarios. Its one ranged attack is also quite low, meaning it doesn’t contribute much offensive pressure to your team. And being a ranged unit, Tokatag Conscript cannot attack if placed in the first position unless certain battle rules are active. This makes its positioning and use highly situational.
Players generally use Tokatag Conscript as a backline defender, specifically to bait and punish melee attackers using the Sneak ability. In battles where the enemy is likely to use multiple melee Sneak units, placing Tokatag in the second-to-last or last position can help absorb and reflect damage, protecting your more valuable cards and creating openings for your damage dealers to act. Because of its Neutral type, Tokatag is flexible and can be added to a wide range of team compositions. However, it’s important to note that its effectiveness relies heavily on predicting the opponent’s moves and choosing it for the right scenario.
In higher levels, Tokatag Conscript may gain slightly more survivability and usefulness, but its base stats and role remain limited. Many experienced players consider it a niche pick—useful in very specific setups, but not a go-to card for most matches. It doesn’t offer much in terms of versatility, and in battles where Sneak strategies aren’t a major threat, it often ends up as a weak link in your team. It can also be countered easily with magic or ranged attackers, which are unaffected by Thorns and can eliminate it quickly due to its low health.
Still, Tokatag Conscript has a place in the game, especially for players who enjoy strategy and baiting their opponents into unfavorable trades. It’s not a flashy card or one that wins games by itself, but in the right hands, it can quietly disrupt the enemy’s momentum. New players might struggle to use it effectively without understanding battle formations and rule sets, but those who take time to learn when and where to use it may find it a clever tool in their collection. Its best use is in matchups where melee Sneak attackers are expected, or in rulesets like “Back to Basics” where abilities are removed, allowing you to rethink its value. Overall, Tokatag Conscript is a modest card with a specific purpose. It rewards careful planning and strategic placement, and while it may not shine in every battle, it proves that even the smallest piece on the board can make a difference when used wisely.
