Free Servers For Hive Projects
Hoi!
Do you run or want to run a Hive project that needs a small basic server? Well, you are in luck, you can get one at no cost to you! We want more projects to run on Hive, and want to help remove one of the barriers of cost to help get that going. We are only going to be offering small virtual servers, and have a max budget of €100 monthly to fund this. Don't expect to get servers with GPUs to be able to mine or train AIs. This is for smaller projects which might not have any revenue streams or proof of concepts to bring themselves to life.
Initially, we plan on just "reselling"(at no cost to the end user) virtual servers from providers like Hetzner, Scaleway, Privex(favored due to accepting hive) to the projects, and then in the future renting a dedicated server and running a hypervisor to create virtual machines to give to the end user.
As of now, projects may request one of the 2 server types:
- xxsmall - Up to 1G ram, 1 core CPU, 25G SSD storage
- xsmall - Up to 2G ram, 2 core CPU, 50G SSD storage
Projects may request the following OSs(latest version of each will always be provided):
- Ubuntu
- Debian
Projects may request the following locations:
- Europe
- North America
No further specifics may be requested at this time.
Hive accounts must be established for a minimum of 6 months to make any requests.
Any verifiable abuse will result in immediate termination.
To request a server, send 0.005 HIVE to this account with an (recommended encrypted) memo with the following details:
- Requested Server Type
- Requested Location
- Requested Server OS
- SSH Public Key
- Contact Email
- Short Description Of Planned Usage
Any request missing any of the details will not receive be filled.
Once the request has been filled, you will receive a encrypted memo with the following information:
- Server ID
- Server IP Address
- Server Login Username
To ensure that the servers are being used and not given to users who are no longer on Hive, we will occasionally send HIVE with a memo, and if no response is received within 1 week, then the server will be shut off.
This project is funded with our own money, and whatever we earn from this hive account. We will continue to monitor and see if we can add additional revenue streams to have more funding.
You can send all that info on a transfer memo? No way... Really??
Yes, the limit is 2048 characters(https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/hive/-/blob/999c636e2f1028290d209d42e5e49c7713e98d0f/libraries/protocol/proto/transfer.proto#L25) for memos, which should be enough to send all the required data.
This is so nice!
Thank you!

That's a nice offer. I'm sure some people would like to run a small service to add value to Hive, but probably won't earn enough from it to pay for hosting. Cheers!
That's the intention!
An interesting read, @steevc.
Thank for sending this along.
Always learning!
This is pretty nice, often most projects only ever need a tiny tiny server to host bots or run things like custom vote bots or token distribution scripts. Ofcourse the possibilities are endless.
Not something I'd personally use as I own a large server I run from home.
We hope to be of use to people in the community! If you know anyone looking for such services, feel free to send them our way.
Great initiative!
Thank you!
This is excellent. I have heard of developers with small projects that require a 24/7 server but they can't afford or support such a thing. Well done with this!
Thanks, we hope to have our first user soon!
Wow this is a great offer and a perfect thing for anyone running projects here. I reckon a number of people will take this up. You might get really busy!
Busy is good! We just need ways to keep funding this to keep it going long into the future!
Fingers crossed!
I don't want to be a party pooper, but I must say this post gives off some mixed vibes.
In todays reality the fact that many usefull project will likely need to trust the VPS with at least a posting key, combined with the fact that the @hivedatacenter account wasn't even an hour old when this was posted does raise some red flags.
Reputation matters.
If this is real, and I really hope it is, it is an amazing initiative and the people behind it should IMHO be proud of it and put their established reputation behind it.
If for now we assume that it is real, it might be usefull to offer a smaller docker based option too and maybe look into cooperation with devs as to offer a few standard docker images.
If the people behind it disclose their involvement and reputation I'll be happy to throw in a few dozen hours at making a HIVE archeology bot docker that fits the provided service. Likely with a patch for a "hosting" entry to the beneficaries list.
We can understand that. We'd rather not share who we are. But we have been around on hive since the steem days. Easiest way is to test with stuff that isn't important(which is what this whole project is about, starting small to grow, this isn't meant to be your main project server to run everything). Plenty of things can be run without needing your keys. Throw a static site up :)
