Bicycles in a war museum

Hello cycling lovers,

A couple of days ago I went to the national military museum Soesterberg in the Netherlands.
The building is housed on a former military air base and it shows the history of warfare from the perspective of the Netherlands. They show the whole history of Dutch warfare from the middle ages until cyber warfare in the future.

In the old hangar of the airport is a huge exhibition of all kinds of military equipment. From the biggest bombs to the smallest listening devices, they have it all.

And why am I posting in the cycling community? I saw war bikes. Dutch war bikes. We are a country of bicycles and that includes bikes in the military.

From the late nineteenth century until 1940, the bicycle is an important means of transport within the army. Cyclist regiments were established consisting of infantrymen who were able o move quickly by bike. The Netherlands is flat so that works perfectly.

This is one of those service bikes. pretty standard, no gears, just paddling hard.

And the paratroopers also had their own bike. This folding bike was strapped on to the para jumpers body and when landed safely, the trooper immediately had the advance to hop on his bike and drive off quickly.

The picture above here also gives you a sneak peak of the rest of the museum.
