The Sun We Didn’t Pay Attention To

When I was still very young, all that I could ever think of was that the only source of electricity supply was from the night, and I was always happy when they gave us light, but no one ever told me that the sun is another means of generating electricity, even better than the one from the federal government. I never knew that the sun could generate electricity for a whole building; I only see it as a means of drying clothes, scorching my skin, and searching for cold water anytime I am under it. But as time goes on, I begin to see that this sun that I am always complaining about is actually useful, and it is a blessing in a lot of ways.

When I came across solar energy, my perspective about the sun changed completely. It made me realize that at times the solution to our problem is right in front of us and that we are not paying attention to it. I could remember the first time I saw something solar; it was all these small rechargeable lamps that use solar. That time when my community was in blackout for some time, this woman selling provisions very close usually used a lamp, and I began to wonder how she was doing it until I went to her shop one day and saw her placing the solar panel outside. No disturbance sounds from the generator, no wasting of fuel and money, and no dangerous exhaust. Just a natural and clean source of electricity.

When I picture solar in my mind, it is an innovation that goes beyond technology because it gives total freedom from depending on the wobbling electricity from the government. It gives freedom from spending excessively on petrol and allows us to save our money. When we are free, that means we have seen the light that protects our mind from total darkness.

I usually imagine how beautiful it will be, how healthy our environment will be, and how peaceful it will be if each home, school, religious place, hospital, and farm will be when everything they do is generated from the purest form of natural electricity. Solar gives hope even though it may not solve all the problems, but at least it is unique.
