Splinterlands Community Engagement Challenge: Ruleset Rumble

This week's Community Engagement Challenge is to pick one or more rulesets and explain how they should be tackled as well as showcasing a battle featuring the ruleset in question. Alright, I'll definitely feature one of the more game-defining ones I happen to have a battle available for.

First off - you can find a full list of all current Rulesets in Splinterlands HERE. It's the official SPL help page so it is updated as soon as any changes to rulesets are made or new rulesets are added. I basically always check it when I do battle write-ups and I don't clearly remember what the name of a given ruleset is or the exact explanation of what it does, so it's definitely useful for both new and seasoned players.

The ruleset I have a battle to show for is Wands Out.

Okay, as you can see in the screenshot above - when this ruleset is active, you can only use Units with Magic Attacks. That's pretty self-explanatory since you won't be allowed to use any other Units anyway - so no real way to go wrong here in the initial setup of the line-up. Now, where it gets tricky is which Element to pick, and which Units would be most suitable. As written above in the SS - it is highly advisable if those units has one (or more) of the following abilities - Phase, Void, Void Armor and Magic Reflect. However, I don't see the most important ability referred to in this defensive list and that is - Silence. The more Silence Units you stack in your line-up, especially pair with a Unit with Void which to serve the role of the main tank, the higher your chance for success is. Of course, Wands Out rarely comes alone, so your choice of Units could be limited by the additional rulesets - for instance you could be allowed to choose only even-mana units or it could be Little League and only Units which cost 4 or less mana could be played.

Here are the units I use the most in this ruleset (I'll include both Modern and Wild as the actual battle is from a Wild Tourney from just an hour ago)

In the screenshot above, I've listed the units I have available with Silence. Goblin Psychic used to be my Modern go to guy while CL was still in Modern and it worked great paired with Nalara Geinek and Immortalis. Now, for Modern, I've switched to using Nalara Geinek and Arcane Skinwalker. Of course, in Wild you can get all 3 in battle or all 4 even if gladiator cards are allowed in the battle. In Wands Out you can never go wrong with including Silence, the more you have of it, the higher your chances for success are.

Next, on the screenshot above we can see my go-to Units with Magic Reflect for Modern/Wild. Some of them have additional defensive benefits in Wands Out - the Inept Healer has Phase and Void on top of having Magic Reflect and is also a Unit with Corrupted Healing so he's a great new addition to the arsenal. The Dark Arborist has Void in addition to Magic Reflect, Djinn Muirat has Void Armor. The ones I use the most in Modern right now are the Inept Healer and the Dark Arborist as I usually go with Lorkus when this ruleset is active.

The Units in the screenshot above are those with Void Armor. Void Armor can be very useful, especially if paired with Repair and any extra armor you can muster as you'll find out after watching the battle I've prepared for you. Generally for Modern I use the Warborn Shaman and Bellowmancer a lot.

In the screenshot above are all the Units with Void available (at least for me) in Modern and Wild. The modern ones I use the most, and which I have already mentioned are - Inept Healer, Nalara Geinek and Dark Arborist. Another Unit I use a lot specifically because it has Void and also grants Deflection on two adjacent units is the Umbral Elemental, really useful for countering the pesky Spell Reflect. Especially if you are planning to play Kelan Gaines. Other than that staples for Wild are, of course, Djinn Oshannus and Iziar, as well as Voidmaw.

Now for the Units with Phase - I've already mentioned most of them but the Continuum Seer deserves being mentioned as she can be really pivotal if she is allowed to gain a decent amount of health before her time to tank comes. With her starting speed of 8, she's just phasing Magic attack left, right and center but she does need extra health to survive the occasional hit or magic reflect. So, the best pairing for her is definitely Lorkus. The other one, of course, is Kelan Gaines. He's a Unit that has become almost an auto-include for all sorts of rulesets so he definitely works great for Wands Out as well, especially given the fact he has Phase and Backfire.

Last but most definitely not least are the ARCHONS (I almost wrote Summoners so I had to put it in CAPS :D). The Archons provide that edge some of your Units could be lacking to vanquish their foes. My Modern go-to now, as I've mentioned already is Lorkus, however, Cryptic could also do work in some situations. As for the Wild arsenal - there are so many options from just CL/RW that you don't really need anything else - the go-to is definitely Immortalis, close second is Grandmaster Rathe, Shtispa, Obsidia and Thaddius are also highly playable depending on the situation.

Now for the battle itself. As you can see from the screenshot - it is from a Wild Gold level tourney. I deliberately went with Rathe and 3x Repair as well as Nalara Geinek as a main tank. Give her a quick watch, I won't spoil the outcome.

This was a fun Community Engagement Challenge. Looking forward for its next edition, so I can showcase some other game-defining ruleset.
