SHARE YOUR BATTLE Weekly Challenge! DRAGONS! - Nov 2022
Dragons are a very unique splinter to play in Splinterlands. Rather than sticking to units of a single splinter, when you select Dragons you can select another splinter to work with Dragons. So lets said you select Dragons and then Water, it means you can use both Dragons and Water units in your battle setup.
This is a very powerful arrangement as it gives you far more flexibility in selecting your units.
Dragons have many powerful summoners and it will takes hours to go through every single one of them. Today we will focus on a new Dragon unit, Runic Skyclaw.
Runic Skyclaw is a rare Dragon unit that cost 9 mana to summon. Below is its stats sheet:
At level 1, it has 3 ranged attack, 3 armor, 5 health and 6 speed! In addition, it also has the ability Snipe and Flight! With 6 speed and Flight it is crazily hard to hit it with ranged or melee. At level 5, it will gain another ability, Reflection Shield. By the time it reach its max level 8, it would have 5 ranged attack, 6 speed, 4 armor, 6 health and gain another ability, Giant Killer.
To show how hard it is to hit Runic Skyclaw, below is the details of a modern ranked match I had using the Dragon summoner Quix with Runic Skyclaw. The battle restriction is:
Close Range + Lost Legendaries rulesets with a max mana limit of 60.

TEAM SETUP:
Splinter | Mana Cost | Position | Reason |
---|---|---|---|
Quix the Devious | 4 | Summoner | Using Quix as the summoner with Earth units as backup in this battle. Reason being Earth has a good taunt monster in Mycelic Slipspawn and a good healer in Goblin Psychic. Earth also has some good tanks. |
Grund | 10 | 1st | Using Grund as the first tank as it has Double Strike and hit very hard. Only problem is it doesn't has any armor but it should be okay in the initial round as most of the enemy attacks will be shifted to my back tank, Mycelic Slipspawn. |
Djinn Chwala | 8 | 2nd | Adding in a 2nd tank just in case my main tank died. Carnage Titan would have been a better unit to be put here but the ruleset Lost Legendaries disallow me to use Carnage Titan. |
Runic Skyclaw | 9 | 3rd | Adding in Runic Skyclaw here to adsorb Snipe attack. |
Goblin Psychic | 6 | 4th | 4th position is reserved for my Goblin Psychic so it can heal the front tank. Another reason why I use Earth instead of Death to go with Dragon. |
Dhampir Infiltrator | 4 | 5th | I used Dhampir Infiltrator as my sneak attacker as it has Double Strike. |
Mycelic Slipspawn | 9 | 6th | My back tank with Taunt. It is to keep my front tank alive so it can break through the opposing tank. |
Total Mana: | 50 |
Lineup:
My opponent used Scarred Llama Mage as the summoner. I really hate facing Scarred Llama Mage as I lost almost 80% of the fight when the opponent added Kron as the last unit. Thankfully the ruleset of Lost Legendaries mean Kron cannot be used. But still Grund with Last Stand ability is crazily strong as well.
End of Round 1:
No death on either team after the end of round 1 but both side SlipSpawn are left with just 2 health points. At this point, it is still hard to see who would win.
End of Round 2:
Both sides SlipSpawn were killed and the real tactical battle start. My Dhampir Infiltrator starts to sneak attack the opponent Grund at the back while my opponent Hunter Jarx tried to snipe my Runic Skyclaw. The Hunter Jarx had only 1 in 4 chance of hitting my Runic Skyclaw at this point.
End of Round 3:
Both sides lost the front tank this round. The opponent Hunter Jarx also managed to get in a lucky hit on my Skyclaw but Skyclaw has armor so it was in no danger of dying. Meanwhile my other dragon unit, Dhampir Infiltrator, continue to harass the opponent's Grund at the back.
End of Round 4:
By the end of round 4, the opponent's Grund is almost dead. My Skyclaw also managed to dodge another Snipe attack this turn.
End of Round 5:
Opponent's Grund is dead and there are only 2 enemy units standing. Both my dragon units, Skyclaw and Dhampir Infiltrator, really did their job well.
End of Round 6:
The opponent's Hunter Jarx got the Last Stand ability but it is not enough facing 4 units of mine. Victory was secured.
KEY STRATEGY
My strategy was to combine the Dragon and Earth units to distribute opponent's damage across 2 tanks while my healer keep the front tank alive as long as possible. As long as my tanks are alive, my DPS dragon units will rain blows onto the enemy lineup.
CONCLUSION
Dragon is a very powerful splinter with lots of powerful units. The only issue with Dragon splinter is you normally need high mana matches to be able to use them effectively. Everytimes there is a high mana matches, I usually would take a look at whether Dragon splinter is available to use or not.
