We all love stories, don't we? Netflix announces a new series about real life events showcasing the 2016 Bitfinex hack & the involvement of the New York based couple (Ilya Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan). It is one of the biggest financial crimes of all time that involves money laundering of 120k Bitcoins that were stolen through the hack. As per Netflix, Chris Smith would be directing the documentary series to explain the chain of events. He is famous for directing the documentary - Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened (2019)" which was about the the Fyre Festival fraud.

Bitfinex Hack

In 2016, Bitfinex crypto exchange was hacked $75 Million worth of crypto were stolen at that time. After the hack, the exchange owners took so many steps to return the funds of their investors by launching two different tokens. Fast forward 2022, Dept. of Justice, USA has alleged that a New York based couple is involved in laundering the stolen money and so far they have recovered $3.6 Billion in crypto. An encrypted filed was owned by alleged preparators that contained addresses and private keys associated with the stolen funds. NOOBS! Who owns the funds now is a question in everyone's mind especially the folks who were robbed of their valuable crypto at that time. Please note that we still don't know who executed the hack and how this couple got involved. The whole story is quite interesting and unbelievable at the same time. Would definitely work for a great movie!

Filmmaking for Crypto

Most crypto-related documentaries made in mainstream media are related to scams and hacks or talk about Bitcoin. But there are so many of them done by indie filmmakers that every crypto enthusiast must watch to get a snapshot of this technology that is changing the world. To learn and experience what early adopters experienced and how it shaped our future.

Filmmaking is one of the most impactful mediums of art to teach the masses about this life-changing technology. No wonder @lordbutterfly is going down that path as a part of Hive Marketing Initiative. Films, once made, can live forever and tell powerful stories to upcoming generations. A Hive film, completely funded by the community DAO is going to be epic and tell our valuable history for years to come. Infact, all Hive Dapps should get their films made, especially the most successful one - Splinterlands. Checkout this documentary made on Axie Infinity that changed the game for Philippines during the Pandemic:

It showcase how local community got benefited through P2E game economy powered by Blockchain Technology during the pandemic when many lost their jobs. Thousands of players around the world, especially in emerging economies where job opportunities are lacking and government is doing a shitjob in providing relief to the pain of their citizens.

Splinterlands did the same thing for many gamers and continuing to do so. We should fund such a community project if someone wants to give it life. I am really excited for the Hive Film. Hopefully it will give an emotional and eye-opening ride to its viewers. That's what films are supposed to do!

Crypto For Filmmaking

Crypto makes everyone their own bank. An indie filmmaker doesn't have to chase big production houses to fund and publish the movies to the masses. Crypto has given that power in the hands of filmmakers.

  1. Crowdfunding: NFTs can help you monetize your art, content and basically everything you can touch or not touch.
  2. Censorship Resistance: A decentralized system is censorship resistant by design. Nobody can delete your content if you upload them on a decentralized storage service like IPFS or host them as NFTs on the blockchain.
  3. Mass Reach: Films, once made & tokenized, can live forever on the blockchain. ✌ Also, crypto userbase is growing and once we hit 1 Billion users, there is not stopping. Filmmakers can potentially reach worldwide audience without any paperwork and film board certificates.

Although Netflix is open to anyone who follows their guidelines and helped many Indie Filmmakers to reach global audiences, but not everyone makes a cut. Crypto fixes that for filmmakers who are quite small, yet talented.

Please let me know your thoughts about this news. Do you think Filmmaking can help in crypto adoption? Do you think Blockchain can impact filmmaking industry in a better way? Comment below!

Film-making can defintely help the crypto-adoption at one condition: some guy really deep into cryptos must have a role into plot-writing and texts verification, to avoid misleads

100%. A crypto expert has to play a huge role in making of the film. Mostly in pre-production to provide better understanding of the technical and functional concepts.
