Ask Hive: NFT Profile Pictures Wen?
No seriously! We should have started this trend, not follow it now. Nevertheless, better late than never! I am not sure what's the issue. Even though there are so many different fronts ends built on Hive, not a single one of them has launched or even thinking about launching NFT profile pictures. Maybe it's technically not feasible as of now but are we doing anything about it? If not, then we must. I am making this post to open a discussion regarding this topic. Community devs and other members can contribute by commenting their valuable thoughts!
NFT PFP
NFT PFP is simply a profile picture with associated NFT on the blockchain. Twitter Blue has released a new feature to allow users (from select few countries) to show off their NFTs on their profile pictures in a Hexagon shape. Gradually it will be rolled out worldwide. It's a Gen Z thing and we need more of them on Hive. 😋
Youtube is thinking to launch NFT PFP very soon. Everyone in the Metaverse will be identified by them. We must act now and bring this feature to Hive DApps!
So many folks are already using @punksonhive as their DP. Why not add a link to the original NFT with the DP? It will open new doors for everyone to flex, buy or sell whatever they like. This feature would also market the collections from the original creator and provide value throughout.
Get Paid Forever With NFTs
On Hive, we get paid once, after 7 days from the time content was published. What about the traffic that folks bring even after 7 days, months, and years. If we somehow convert each publishing into NFTs and add a buy or collect button on the post itself. It will provide creators an opportunity to earn forever through royalties. Every time someone buys your content NFT, you get a small percentage of the sale. This is what Lens Protocol wants to do on Polygon. It's another idea I had in mind related to NFTs so if any hive dev is reading it, please give it a thought.
Future Is Multichain
Going multichain seems to be the most promising marketing hack. Do you know why Ethereum is so successful? Because different communities built bridges to other Blockchains, making Ethereum's landscape even bigger.
Do you know why Splinterlands is so successful?
Even though it's built on Hive, it allows you to connect to different networks like ETH, WAX, BSC & many more. This is what all Hive DApps can learn from its success.
All social DApps built on Hive should also go multi-chain. I don't know how but we need to find innovative ways to do it. Adding NFT PFPs from multiple chains can be a start. Crypto is not a zero-sum game and collaboration with other ecosystems will take us far. We must build, not one, but several bridges to different blockchains. It will only grow us bigger because each bridge would market Hive and provide more opportunities to the users from both ends.

I don't know about whether or not this is a good idea. At least the new people getting onboard might think it's a little weird that they can't change their profile picture.

I think that can be done by the application so long as the user gives permission. After all we see people use hive punks as their avatar quite often.
