May is here and, as every month, the community delights us with a new theme for its monthly contest. This time, the contest is about DIY in the kitchen and, although I am not a person who enjoys this activity very much, I can think of several ideas to make this place a more fun and beautiful space.

On this occasion, I want to share with you one of those ideas through a tutorial in which I will show you how to make a kitchen towel holder in the shape of a flower. I will also take this opportunity to dedicate this craft to all the creative mothers in the community who, with much love, prepare delicacies for their children in their kitchens.

Mayo ya está aquí y, como cada mes, la comunidad nos deleita con un nuevo tema para su concurso mensual. Esta vez, el concurso trata sobre el DIY en la cocina y, aunque no soy una persona que disfruta mucho de esta actividad, se me ocurren varias ideas para hacer de este lugar un espacio más divertido y bello.

En esta ocasión, quiero compartirles una de esas ideas a través de un tutorial en el cual les mostraré cómo elaborar un porta paños de cocina con forma de flor. También aprovecharé para dedicar esta manualidad a todas las madres creadoras de la comunidad que, con mucho amor, preparan delicias para sus hijos en sus cocinas.

1️⃣ The first step is to take the polystyrene sphere and line it with smooth skin-colored fomi. To do this, the fomi will undergo a thermoforming process and then the excess will be cut off with scissors.

El primer paso consiste en tomar la esfera de poliestireno y forrarla con fomi liso color piel. Para ello, el fomi se someterá a un proceso de termoformado y luego se cortará el excedente con unas tijeras.

2️⃣ Next, about 12 tabs will be marked and cut out in plain red fomi and about 6 in frosted red fomi. I don't want to mention exact measurements, as the tabs will be for making the petals and the width and length of these will depend on the size of the polystyrene sphere.

A continuación se marcarán y recortarán unas 12 lengüetas en fomi rojo liso y unas 6 en fomi rojo escarchado. No quisiera mencionar medidas exactas, ya que las lengüetas serán para hacer los pétalos y el ancho y largo de estas dependerán del tamaño de la esfera de poliestireno.

3️⃣ Each of the tabs will be folded a little below the middle and the sides will be glued on top of the fold, creating the figure shown below. Once all the tabs are folded, they will be glued around the sphere, forming the first part of the flower.

A cada una de las lengüetas se les hará un doblez un poco por debajo de la mitad y encima del doble se pegarán los laterales, creando la figura que se muestra a continuación. Una vez dobladas todas las lengüetas, se pegarán alrededor de la esfera, conformando la primera parte de la flor.

4️⃣ The frosted red tabs, being fewer in number, will be cut in half and glued behind the red petals. This step can be done before gluing the petals around the sphere and is done mainly to increase the size of the flower, add a shiny touch and, incidentally, save material.

Las lengüetas de color rojo escarchado, al ser menos, se cortarán a la mitad y se pegarán por detrás de los pétalos rojos. Este paso se puede hacer antes de pegar los pétalos alrededor de la esfera y se realiza principalmente para aumentar el tamaño de la flor, agregarle un toque brillante y, de paso, ahorrar material.

5️⃣ With a skewer stick and a sheet of green fomi you will create the stem that will join the metal ring to the rest of the ornament. Using a toothpick is optional, although it can be a good option to add rigidity to the union.

Con un palo de brocheta y una lámina de fomi verde se creará el tallo que unirá el aro metálico con el resto del adorno. Utilizar un palillo es opcional, aunque puede ser una buena opción para agregar rigidez a la unión.

6️⃣ With the base structure ready, I draw the face with a pencil and then color it. With white and green paint I color the eyes and, with a black marker, I draw the rest of the lines.

In the upper right corner, I placed a small pink bow, which I made with pink frosted fomi.

Con la estructura base lista, dibujo con un lápiz el rostro para luego darle color. Con pintura blanca y verde coloreo los ojos y, con un marcador negro, trazo el resto de las líneas.

En la esquina superior derecha, coloqué un pequeño moño rosado, el cual elaboré con fomi rosado escarchado.

7️⃣ I continue adding details such as some leaves glued on the back of the stem. I also glued a ribbon on the back top to hang the cloth holder, and to finish, with white paint, I added 3 dots for each petal to make it even more colorful.

Continuo agregando detalles tales como unas hojas pegadas en la parte trasera del tallo. Pegué también una cinta en la parte trasera superior para colgar la porta paños, y para finalizar, con pintura blanca, agregué 3 puntos por cada pétalo para hacerlo aún más vistoso.
