Joey Styles' Wrestling Commentary Before ECW
Most pro wrestling fans consider Joey Styles to be the "Voice of ECW". He took over television announcing duties for ECW Hardcore TV in mid-1993, replacing Jay Sulli and his wide range of color commentators such as Stevie Wonderful, Paul E. Dangerously, Eddie Gilbert and others.
However, most fans don't know that while still in college, Joey did TV announcing for the North American Wrestling Alliance (NAWA) in 1992 until early 1993. The above video has Joey doing commentary as the first match begins.
NAWA matches can be found on this playlist, with Styles doing play-by-play announcing in the 1992 videos: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLj5Zx1HZR2Nlw_R_8oGRNCh22W50hwBBD
His Wikipedia entry also covers his time in college and with NAWA:
North American Wrestling Alliance (1992–1993)
Joey Styles got his start in professional wrestling announcing while still attending Hofstra University by working for Tony Capone's North American Wrestling Alliance.[5] He would often split time with former WWE announcer Craig DeGeorge or join DeGeorge for a two-man commentary team. Styles would also host a segment called "NAWA Superstar Stats" where he would talk about the wrestlers and their accomplishments. The NAWA aired on Sportschannel America (now NBC Sports Network through mergers and acquisitions) for a brief time.
Towards the end of this period, Styles was credited as author of a column in Wrestling 93: Rulebreaker, a quarterly wrestling magazine and sister publication of Pro Wrestling Illustrated, supportive of heels.
Several wrestlers who later appeared in ECW are seen in these videos including: Big Guido, the Tazmaniac, Metal Maniac, Tommy Dreamer, Nikolai Volkoff and others.
