Helping Newer Pro Wrestling Fans Learn About Al Snow And The Head In ECW
The above photo was credited to the old RingTheDamnBell.wordpress.com website (currently no longer active). This post is just to help newer professional wrestling fans learn more about The Head and how Al Snow started this fan-favorite engagement during his time in ECW.
Al Snow was in the process of reinventing his wrestling career when he was in ECW. Whether he was "on loan" from then-WWF, or if he was a free agent, is still uncertain. Toward the end of 1997 and into 1998, he generated perhaps the most fan-friendly, fan-participation gimmick in modern pro wrestling. That was the use of styrofoam heads in the hands of fans throughout the arena; and fans chanted "Head" during both his entrance before, and exit after, his matches during that time. Paul Heyman chose the music track "Breathe" by Prodigy, and the fans organically timed their "Head" chants around the sections of the song.
Here is one of the entrances when Al Snow faced Roadkill (accompanying Paul Diamond and Chastity) at the ECW Arena in Philadelphia in early 1998. If there ever was an example of how ECW fans were able to be a part of the show, this very well may be the top instance!
The Head was in other segments on Hardcore TV such as this one from November 1997. It shows some of the origins of The Head in promo vignettes with Al Snow, and you can see the ECW Arena crowd reacting well to The Head in the weeks prior to the styrofoam heads being given out by wrestlers. Talent not working that night often came out to ring after the first or second match with huge cardboard boxes, and they got into the ring & starting throwing heads out to the audience in preparation for Al Snow's upcoming match.
Here are more videos about Al Snow talking about the Head & his time in ECW:
This compilation video even has adult film star Jenna Jameson do a backstage vignette with the Head. That segment aired on ECW Hardcore TV at the time as well:
If you have any photos of yourself and/or your friends with original ECW styrofoam heads then you are welcome to post them in the replies. Please no photoshopped, AI or other fake photos -- just those who truly attended ECW events and you were smart enough to keep your head!
