2024 Battle Of The Day 237/366

BATTLE LINK -- August 24, 2024 -- Day 237 of 366 vs. @stever82

Today's battle occurred in Modern Diamond ranked play, allowing for 49 mana with two rulesets: Blood and Sunder and Counterspell. Without dragon and fire available, we played different summoners; as you know, I love choosing battles with two vastly different lineups.

I suspect my opponent, SteveR, chose Immortalis for the void ability to protect his magic attacker from the counterspell rule. He also used Croire to power up his Grim Smith with a melee attack. Although his lineup deals a bunch of damage on paper, it is awfully slow and two of the monsters are neutralized by forcefield.

In contrast, my featured card, the new Rebellion legendary dual-element summoner Cryptic, offered my team speed and evasion. Both of the null attack monsters slowed down my opponent, so combined with Cryptic, SteveR was down three speed and had to deal with blind in a battle with Counterspell.

On top of the speed advantage, two of my monsters got enfeeble from Cryptic's tactic, giving them the chance to strip void away from my opponent's monsters. Despite the counterspell rule, Skok ensured half my monsters would have a magic attack. Baajkira comes with a big butt and void, withstanding most of the magic reflection damage.

Surprisingly, my opponent didn't bring much of a gameplan to deal with Venka and was punished for this critical oversight. Daigendark Surveyer is really good at getting in damage before Venka's first attack, greatly improving the chances that Venka gets to trample on its Round 1 attack.

I loved House Dimir during my Magic: the Gathering days, and I love playing with Cryptic now -- joining the forces of the death and water elements. I can't wait to start building up the levels of my new Rebellion reward cards, especially Commander Slade and Meriput Slinger to use with Cryptic.
