Duty calls - Valiant Hearts: The Great War™
This is one of those few videogames in which I have had a totally different experience, since the visual art, despite not focusing on graphic realism, amazes me how at this point Ubisoft Montpellier brings a jewel in the midst of totally commercial games and lacking soul.

And in the middle of all this chaos I talk about the title called “Valiant Hearts: The Great War”, a video game of comic style visual art that in few games I have managed to appreciate so well, because each scenario is worth exploring and mentioning from the moment one in which a narrator tells us how a young man named Karl is working on his farm, but is interrupted by soldiers who come to recruit him by force, because if all this is inspired by real scenarios of the First World War from 1914 to 1918. ![]() Every scene is portrayed in a dramatic and sad way, as he leaves his wife alone on the farm with their little daughter, but there is no objection, as most of the French inhabitants living in Germany had to leave the country to defend their country. ![]() We see how this man leaves his family, however, after a few days without knowing anything about her husband we see that the woman now says goodbye to her father an older man who was also called to defend his people, so now the woman is all alone because the war was more bloody, this moment touched my heart without a doubt, as they managed to do a very good visual work accompanied by a soundtrack worthy of a melancholic video game. ![]() I understand that this is a comic style video game and that is what I like the most because they bet on something more risky in the middle of a graphic quality that demands realism almost as if it were standard; however, in this is that it shines above many for its narrative and as I feel that the game apart from presenting characters with deep stories also teaches you history with tips or interesting facts about the First World War, I was entertained with this because it shows you the cruelty of war, even throughout the map you have objects that you find to then open its historical context. ![]() So while you recreate yourself you learn history xd, something that is not at all overwhelming like reading a book for some people. ![]() This gentleman leaves the farm to join the troops, this is where the tutorial begins, and I found it immersive, and it didn't get on my nerves at all, because they knew how to do it in conjunction with the gameplay, so it's not tedious at all. ![]() The mechanics are pretty simple, aside from walking sideways like a 2D video game, we are tasked with destroying some enemies and obstacles, which gives me a hint that I'll see puzzles everywhere or something. ![]() This older man after having a “training” and I put it in quotation marks because it is really sad to see how even older people in real life at that time had to defend in the physical conditions they were in. But well, continuing with the plot, now he is going to Paris to get the train that will take them to the battle, meanwhile he writes a letter to his beloved granddaughter and daughter, where he tells her everything and says that he still has not seen any trace of Karl. ![]() Arriving at the Paris subway we see how a man fights against some annoying soldiers, so we decide to give him a hand to save him from that situation, there we meet a new friendship in the middle of all that commotion. ![]() ![]() Although it doesn't last long on screen, they make it clear to us that a solid friendship was formed out of respect for having helped him. ![]() After solving a few interesting puzzles I find an object from the list and that is an iron pen which would be a more rudimentary version of the current pens, but due to the situations of the war and messaging by letters this production would increase even more and without realizing it you already know something new from the story xd. ![]() We headed to the battlefield to repel the German troops led by the “male Dorf”. ![]() With a war cry to give encouragement the captain leads the French troop to where the enemy trenches, this is where the action begins, and I had to dodge some enemy shells, unfortunately the captain lost his life later and basically everyone died. ![]() All the allies fell in a pile, until our old friend was hit by artillery and wounded. ![]() In another scene we can see the devastated Marie reading the letter from the regiment that tells her that her husband was wounded and was probably taken prisoner, although they do not know for sure, I hope this man is still well, but it will be for the next post I will be showing you new scenarios and mechanics that this title prepares for us. Thank you for commenting and supporting without a doubt today I brought something fresh to the community, I hope you like it! Such a unique game visually. I would love to play the game to know more about the stories of War. I felt bad that our hero died at the end. How many more such short stories are there in the game?
