Dcypher P2E Weekend #18, Deck Breakdown and CSR Update⚔

The Weekend

The last weekend performance before the CSR (Core Set Refresh) hit. Stuck to my Deception list, which I’ll break down in a bit, and ended on a 16/25 wins. This was great! Or so I thought, for a chance to get a new legendary card from the CSR set. However, with the new update now live for everybody, the predictable weekend meta is in disarray. Curious to find out what new creative decks everyone will be building and how long it will take for a good chunk of the player base to collect all most of the new cards. So far, Magic has been seeing some good win rates.

Week 18

This was quite refreshing to see a more balanced out opponents list. Sage of Renewal was carry the Control and Midrange Nature meta, I was sure that I would be facing these Nature decks again this weekend. Luckily, I was blessed with some more diversity. The sage has also been nerfed in the CSR update, which is great! Cause that card was just over tuned.

Pack Rewards

While I was disappointed for not getting a new CSR legendary, I did get some amazing other cards.

• Thalia, Charite Temptress: I already had a copy of Thalia, but with the CSR update this may be a potentially strong card for Sleep Deception decks. Definitely something I will experiment with once I get more sleep cards in my collection
• Grand Hall: Overall great card for WAR decks utilizing Leech for mid to late game. I’ve had this card in my decks on and off. However, with the CSR update it received a slight nerf, as the Grand Hall itself doesn’t get leach and the damage up anymore.
• Celestial Stag: After 3 months of playing, I finally pulled a second copy of the Stag. 2x these are definitely going into my Nature decks. The amount of card generating value it gives is just insane, especially if you enjoy the RNG nature of Nature! (pun not intended :p)
• Necroscepter: This was a card that had been eluding me for so long. It’s been the reason I hadn’t been playing Death decks as much. I have to say, now that I finally have a copy in my Zombie Death deck, I’m noticing a significant improvement already.

I’m gonna break down my deception list, which I found still works pretty well even after the update.

Mulligan

Godpower: Orfeo’s Distraction

There’s plenty options to mulligan for to get a early start. If going first, ideally try to get The Hollow. For going second, a more reactive approach with Stoneskin Poison and Umber Arrow. The top 4 cards are good for most situations.

Strategy

If your Patient Pickpocket and The Hollow sticks, try and get as much value as possible by generating guild cards or stealing cards for your opponent. Do keep in mind not to overdraw if your Hollow stays alive for long. If you get Makeshift Shiv early, try to either remove creatures or hit face when possible to generate favor as fast as possible. Because of the low cost cards in the early game, you might run out of cards fast, and the sanctum is your other option for card generation.

Counterfeit is a situational card that you can use to turn games around against relic opponents. War decks and Zombie decks come to mind.

When it comes to using Ludia’s Dedicant, try to save your PIP for turn 4. This way you can get immediate value out of it by using your godpower.

The rest of the creatures are in there to do enough damage and the Guild Enforcers to protect your own face. Dark Knives and Assassin’s Aim can be your trump cards as surprise attacks for lethal. Ideally you want to end the match by 6 or at the latest 7 mana before running out of steam, unless you generated some amazing late game cards from The Hollow.
