A New GEM ~ Mindless Thrall

Welcome to my Splinterlands Community engagement challenge. This is a post I make every weekend as a part of community engagement participation, which every week we are challenged to share our tactic, strategy or meta when we are playing this awesome game.

This time we are challenged to share our hidden gem. I believe there isn't any hidden gem in Splinterlands, because once people see, they always copy and optimize it. So the card will no longer be a secret or hidden gem.

However, I am sharing you my recently found gem. It is a new card, which I see many has not familiar in using the card, or maybe they do not know how good is the card. It is the Mindless Thrall.

Mindless Thrall is a new reward card, coming for the Conclave Arcana set. It is rare rarity and has a neutral element, so I think this is a great card for many situation. One thing that is interesting about this one is a phase ability supported with 5 speed. It is awesome but it leaves a big question here... Will it work?

Recently we have many mages with high speed, which was very different compared to past or 3 years ago. In the past, most mages were slow, so having 3 speed mage was something unique and could be a game changer. Djinn Oshannus was one of the perfect card to describe how unique he was in the past, but seems very regular right now.

So I have been seeing people only use this card as a fast killer, expecting high speed with 2-3 magic damage will make an early kill every round, so they can build up momentum in their battle.

However I believe with proper support, this Mindless Thrall can be a lethal, a "hidden" gem that people are not thinking about because it needs some tweak before. So let me try to show how Mindless Thrall will be the gem in your selection.

Ok let me choose this battle to show that Mindless Thrall will be my gem, by becoming my main tank lol. A tank with 5 health point with no armor and evasive ability other than phase. This is not a smart move, as you can see my opponent is attacking with these units:

The slowest was 3 speed and the fastest was 4 speed. Mindless Thrall was still faster than any of those, but with only 1-2 speed different, it meant he had only 10-20% evasive rate, which was a dumb move actually.

However this was the part how to turn him into a gem. People would think that having 3-4 speed was more than enough to hit. So let me deploy my trick here.

3 of my backline were speed modifier units. I had 2 swiftness ability and 1 slow ability, those would build up 3 speed different. Those were needed to boost up Mindless Thrall evasion rate, and with those modifiers, he would have 40-50% evasive rate.

So let see how this would go

at round 2, my team was leading with one more unit. They could not kill my Mindless Thrall, because he kept evading the incoming attacks.

Round 3 was the last one. My team swiped off everyone in this round.

So in this battle, Mindless Thrall proved himself capable as the main tank, he dodged many attacks and lasted till the end. Does this prove him as a good evasive tank?

My answer is no. This is no melee ruleset battle, the keep your distance ruleset. If there is a melee tank as his opponent, he would gone in one blow. Current melee tanks are full of fast hitter with ridiculous melee damage.

Overall I can say he is not a great tank despite his high speed and a phase ability. Something is missing, such as armor, void, or shield ability. A fly and dodge ability too. So that's the "hidden trick" you must add, to make this Mindless Thrall as the hidden gem in your line up.

If you add those from your backline units, I bet Mindless Thrall can be an unexpected variable for your opponent. He has the speed and the phase, only some finishing touch left.
