Mars Colony IS A Pipedream

Anyone else here thinking that a Mars colony is kind of a pipedream that will never be profitable for the human race?? Don't get me wrong i still want Elon to make these giant rockets, they'll be very useful.

Just that Mars won't make any financial sense for potentially hundreds of years, it also have nothing special to bring that we don't already have on Earth.

The more i think about it, the less it make sense, especially considering that once you are in space, and you can survive there. Btw habitat technology that would allow us to survive on Mars would also allow us to survive in other space. Why would we ever want to go back in a planet's gravity well?? when we can just stay in other space and use all the benefit of 0G to our advantage. You can simulate gravity with rotation and before you tell me "but the coriolis effect" if the diameter of the rotating station is large enough, the effect become too small for us to perceive, so it's really a non issue at some point.

You can get all the minerals and water from asteroids and comets. You can travel around using highly efficient ion engine instead of having to build giant rockets that are 95% fuel and 5% all of the rest.

Just feel like when we have this kind of technology we should make self sustaining space stations. Going back into a gravity well that multiply our energy requirement by multiple orders of magnitude make no sense whatsoever.
The survival of the specie argument is a bit flawed. Going to Mars only save use from castatrophes impacting earth only, many other cosmic catastrophe are just as likely to impact Mars. Gamma ray burst, wandering black holes, the sun exploding are all event that would impact both Earth and Mars at the same time. In space stations you can just... move out of the way and go elsewhere. We're supposed to settle another planet, make giant colonies of millions of people to survive, but when the catastrophe hit, we will need to build some space ships to make only a handful survive by leaving those colonies.. instead just live in the spaceship already reading to leave whenever you want.
