Center Bear at the Europa-Center: Berlin’s Night Sky in Blue

Right in the heart of Berlin, at the Europa-Center near Breitscheidplatz, stands a very special Buddy Bear: the “Center Bear,” designed by Berlin-based artist Jürgen Wölke. It's number 9 in my growing collection of documented Buddy Bears – and definitely one of the most striking.

Painted in a deep midnight blue, the bear evokes the feeling of a clear starry sky. On its side shines the famous Quadriga from the Brandenburg Gate, illustrated in a radiant turquoise. Wölke, known for his intricate designs and Berlin-themed artwork, has given this bear an iconic look that fits perfectly with the light and water elements of the Europa-Center.

The Buddy Bear project began in 2001 and stands for tolerance, international understanding, and Berlin’s open spirit. Each bear is a unique piece – painted by artists from around the globe – and a reflection of the city’s creative diversity. The Center Bear adds an elegant, almost ceremonial flair to the family.

I’m always amazed at how much emotion and sense of belonging a painted plastic bear can evoke. Especially at night, the Center Bear comes to life: its deep blue surface reflects the ambient light, while the golden stars on its skin glow – it’s like Berlin’s night sky turned into art.

Center-Bär im Europa-Center: Die Berliner Nacht in Blau

Mitten im Herzen Berlins, im Europa-Center nahe dem Breitscheidplatz, steht ein ganz besonderer Buddy Bär: der „Center-Bär“, gestaltet vom Berliner Künstler Jürgen Wölke. Es ist der neunte Bär in meiner wachsenden Sammlung dokumentierter Buddy Bären – und definitiv einer der eindrucksvollsten.

In tiefem Nachtblau gehalten, erinnert der Bär an einen klaren Sternenhimmel. Auf seiner Flanke prangt die berühmte Quadriga vom Brandenburger Tor, majestätisch und strahlend in hellem Türkis. Wölke, der für seine detailverliebten Illustrationen und Berlin-Motive bekannt ist, hat diesem Bären ein ikonisches Erscheinungsbild verliehen, das sich harmonisch in das Licht- und Wasserambiente des Europa-Centers einfügt.

Die Idee der Buddy Bären geht auf das Jahr 2001 zurück. Sie stehen symbolisch für Toleranz, Völkerverständigung und die Offenheit Berlins. Jeder Bär ist ein Unikat – bemalt von Künstler:innen aus aller Welt – und ein Spiegel der kreativen Vielfalt dieser Stadt. Der Center-Bär fügt dem ein elegantes, fast feierliches Element hinzu.

Ich bin jedes Mal fasziniert, wie stark ein bemalter Kunststoffbär Emotionen und Heimatgefühl hervorrufen kann. Besonders bei Nacht entfaltet der Center-Bär seinen vollen Zauber: Das tiefe Blau reflektiert das Licht der Umgebung, während die goldenen Sterne auf seiner Haut leuchten – wie eine Berliner Nacht in Kunst gegossen.
