A sweet surprise in the Tiergarten: Rolf's city honey
It's the chance encounters that make life in Berlin so exciting. Yesterday, during a walk in Berlin's Tiergarten, I had the pleasure of meeting Rolf - a beekeeper whose bee colonies work in the middle of the city in summer and whose delicious honey is sold directly on site in the Tiergarten in winter.
Rolf told me about his unusual passion - beekeeping in the big city. He lets his bees work in the city's green spaces, where they play an important role in the ecological balance. In a big city like Berlin? Yes, right there, because with its countless parks and 148,000 city trees, biodiversity is much higher than in the countryside, where it is being pushed back more and more by extensive monocultures. In addition, Berlin is free of pesticides that are regularly used in commercial agriculture outside the city. Crazy or - for the bees, life in the city is obviously healthier than in the countryside, thinks Rolf.
A fast track through the Berlin bureaucracy
Rolf's story of how he obtained permission for his apiaries in the Tiergarten was particularly impressive. After a conversation with a gardener he met by chance while jogging in the Tiergarten, he was put in touch with the head of the Parks Department and it took less than two weeks to get the permit. A refreshing anecdote about positive experiences with bureaucracy in Berlin.
Enjoying honey in winter
The highlight of my meeting with Rolf was undoubtedly the honey. I was able to taste different varieties on the spot. His winning honey, from the blossoming chestnut trees, is processed with great attention to detail at the Mosaik workshops for the disabled. Natural, cold-pressed and unfiltered - a taste experience that has already attracted attention and rightly won awards. Rolf told me that this honey had won a Tagesspiegel competition. The article is behind a paywall on the net, so I can't really check it. But it's not that important, because I like the honey.
Berlin, always good for a surprise
Yesterday's trip showed me once again how Berlin surprises with its diversity and creativity. Rolf and his bees are another example of the sheer endless possibilities of this city. Stay tuned, because I have many more stories to tell you from Berlin.

Ciao Kakao,
Eure Morticia

looks like urban honey is a trend!
Never been in Lyon can you recommend it?
Lyon is a beautiful city with picturesque old quarters, but it's also a modern city that has taken a green turn in recent years. It's also the gastronomic capital, and there's plenty of entertainment and cultural events.
I've lived here for a long time and have no intention of leaving, even if the real estate is unaffordable 😀
This sounds as it is more than worth a trip 🧳
I will get Lyon a place on my bucket list! Thank you for your nice promotion of your hometown!

That’s fascinating. You don’t often relate cities with bees, but it’s obviously more common than you’d think, taking into account the other comment here.
I guess when you think about it more deeply, any city that has parks and gardens with flowering plants will likely attract bees. But someone like Rolf who is smart enough to capitalise on this is something I’d not encountered until this post.
As an aside, having a son with a disability, I particularly like that Rolf’s honey is processed at a facility that makes employment accessible for those living with disability. Kudos to him. And thank you to you, for sharing this story.
Thank you for your nice comment. I really enjoy when people read the full article - it is by far not the majority here on HIVE.
It is certainly a challenge to shape your son's life. I also think such initiatives are very important and I am happy if I can support them with my product selection. There is certainly cheaper honey to buy than Rolf's, but I am happy to be able to support him (Rolf), the idea of beekeeping in the city of Berlin and the facility that makes employment accessible for those living with disability in this way. And I also get a story for my blog out of it. That's something worth to buy :-)
I think anyone that innovative definitely deserves to bee (see what I did there!) supported, and often, the more boutique products that are made without the input of large corporations are the ones that taste better, so are always worth paying more for. Plus, as you said, you’re supporting someone such as Rolf, and if you happen to get a unique story to share, then even better too.
I get what you’re saying about people not really making it to the end of posts anymore. I often wonder if anyone even reads them sometimes. Curation trails are good in a world where people just want to set and forget, but they seem to remove the need to actually interact with the platform. I’m not sure how you feel about it, but I find that a thoughtful comment tells me my post has been read and really appreciated and, for me, that is often times more valuable than an upvote.
So interesting the glass container, I’m honey lover 🍯
In Germany most of the honey is delivered in a glass container - but the branding with the Berlin-Bear and a Bee-Eye is really interesting and kreative.
Thank you for your visit on my Blog and your nice comment!
