AFTER SOME HESITATION, SEGA HAS A NFT TRADEMARK IN THE REGISTER
As for any trend that is pretty bad for the gaming industry, the big studios are tripping over themselves to get on the stage. A NFT is everywhere; try as hard as you can, you cannot escape it. Ubisoft, Square Enix, GameStop, and as of today, Troy Baker has all thrown into the ring. Originally, Sega seemed very concerned about getting involved and actually listening to the overwhelmingly negative feedback on social media. Nonetheless, we know that that will likely be not a good thing.
As seen by VGC, Sega has registered a trademark for the Japanese brand Sega NFT. This comes complete with a new logo, showing that the company has really put some effort into planning its expansion into the controversial practice. This comes a week after a spokesperson said that the studio would give them a miss if they appeared to be “simple money-making,” and not add a negative element to its games.

The trademark application was submitted in December 2021, weeks before the company claimed it was gauging feedback before making a decision. This gives us two options. Either the recent statement or Sega is simply laying the groundwork for the sabotage of the plan. If this case is true, there’s certainly no chance it will find many positive incidents of NFT implementation in games.
The NFT games were either scrapped or taken down because of legal concerns. The only notable exception was the Ubisoft Quartz, which saw playable “digits” added to Ghost Recon Breakpoint – much to the rage of players. The announcement trailer sits at 1.7k likes, but 43k dislikes (thank you for the Return YouTube Dislike extension).
If Sega continues his run, who knows what games we’ll see. Yakuza? Persona? Sonic? Please don’t bring back the Chao garden to do all this.
