Would I Leave Hive? ~ my Thoughts on Censorship, Jumping Ship, and my Future on this Platform.

avatar
(Edited)

I am not quite sure where this post should go. I pondered joining a new community - one where people share about their experience on HIVE or in content creation as a whole or one where people discuss the ups & downs of the crypto markets. But, it didn't feel quite right.

When I sat down to jot down some notes about experiences here on Hive it seemed right to share it here, in the Daily Blog community where I so often post about aspects of my life and the bits & bobs that don't fit in the other communities I regular post in.

During the past few weeks I have been tagged in posts & contacted directly about the supposed censorship here on Hive and have been personally asked to join other (supposedly) censorship-free platforms. I am not going to name names nor do I feel weird about people expressing their opinions about this platform. Honestly I feel honored that anyone feels that my content should be found on other web3 platforms.

I myself have some opinions about the supposed censorship issue on HIVE. I say supposed censorship on Hive because I personally have never experienced any sort of censorship. Quite the opposite in fact! Previous to joining HIVE I shared regularly on Instagram as well as Tumblr for years & years, never gaining much traction and very often feeling that my personal opinions were preventing my content from getting viewed by a larger audience. This was the 2020 era and I had quite a controversial opinion about health & wellness that I shared freely. So really, it is no mystery as to why my content was only seen by a handful of like-minded folks. And in my personal life I found that most people did not want to hear my opinion on anything else once they found out that I wouldn't be taking the vaccine.

I guess you could say that I learned my lesson about sharing on that particular subject and when I began to post on Hive, first under the moniker of libra.gardener and now Calendula Craft, I just decided to not venture into too controversial of waters. I don't discuss the politics of my home country (USA), nor of my current home of Argentina. Avoiding politics & medical issues is not a big ask of myself. In my regular life I don't participate in politics and avoid any sort of medical intervention, I haven't been to the doctors since I was about 21 (I am 32 now).

Herbs are my medicine, psychedelics are my therapist, and nature is my church. I have shared very very often the details of my spiritual beliefs as a witch and am very happy to say that I have never received any sort of negative feedback or hateful comment. I have literally never received a hateful comments on Hive in my 4 + years of sharing here. Even when someone corrected me about mis-identifying a plant or suggested that I might be incorrect about some data, it was always written in the kindest of ways. I cannot say the same about my comments section on YouTube and TikTok...

This is something I can't just discount due to a few people feeling that there is censorship here on Hive. How could I jump ship when Hive has granted me so many benefits in these past few years? HIVE has helped me gain a bit of savings in my crypto portfolio, yes, but, more importantly has shown me that my writing/photography/video making is worth something and that people are inspired by what I share here.

So, why are people asking me to join them in an exodus?

IDK really. I do find it a bit suspicious that the people are leaving Hive for Blurt.blog, a website represented by an emoji who's mouth is covered.

To me this image doesn't give me any sort of confidence that this will be a censorship free space. What about you?

And as for Calendula Craft ... I will continue to be a regular contributor for the foreseeable future. Sharing on Hive has become a part of my career in ways that I never imagined. Each and every morning I open up my notebook to write down ideas for future posts and videos.

I love that I can finally say that my writing & video making is compensated and that people find some benefit to what I share. Hive is the virtual hug from the internet that I so desired.

So, Hive and all it's users, I hug you back!

This post bought a smile to my face. I truly believe that Hive is what you make it and it looks like you have made it your own in your own way which is magic 😀

I so agree ~ it is what you make it! That is why it is so interesting to me that some people can have such a negative vision of HIVE, could it be that they are just negative people in general?

Thanks so much for your comment & compliment. These kinds words are what make Hive such a wonderful place to share.

You are very welcome!

I think that in some cases people can be swayed by those who are negative in many respects. Like a mind plague!

I much prefer to be upbeat in life 😀😀

I do find it a bit suspicious that the people are leaving HIVE for Blurt.blog, a website represented by an emoji who's mouth is covered.

It's the graveyard of HIVE'rs, where people go when they are no longer welcome on HIVE for one reason or another. If you don't take the piss, it will never happen to you or anyone. The reward pool is guarded well.

very interesting to hear!! your comment and the other's are really helping me understand the why behind this supposed exodus. thanks so much for commenting and letting me know what is up. I plan to continue to share here on Hive and not "take the piss" as you so wisely suggest. Thank you!!

'Exodus'.., is a word that Blurt people like. They they want that and it's never been so. The token being over 100x less valuable than HIVE hardly helps their cause, and having few talented developers is another factor.

I don't know if you use peakd.com or ecency or even hive.blog, but having a half decent interface helps and theirs has not changed since the birth in June 2020 or thereabouts, and then there's fees for everything you do.

They might be piddly fees, but I don't like any type of fees and that's where HIVE (and STEEM) are different. STEEM is another story, it's mostly for far Eastern people that speak other languages now, but it's where HIVE was born and there's a dark history to it.

I am genuinely curious: what is the point of downvoting?
Do you gain something by downvoting?
If there is a post I don't like I just keep on scrolling and pay no attention to it.

And - bonus question - is your downvoting the reason why your comment says "This content got low rating by people"?

Excellent question:

  • The purpose of downvoting is typically reward disagreement. By downvoting to typically send part or all of the potential rewards back to the reward pool

  • No you don’t gain anything by downvoting, it is community service. You keep the network clean of spam or bad actors

That’s the difference between you and me. You don’t like something you keep scrolling.

You see someone getting robbed, you keep on walking. It’s a perfectly fine personal safety decision.

I see someone getting robbed. I go over there and punch the robber under his jawbone :)

hm, I am not sure those two situations are the same at all ... I only once have witnessed a robbery and did intervene, in my own unique way ~ by throwing rocks and scaring the robbers away. But, I do see your point, I tend to avoid conflict when possible and you confront it head on :)

Perhaps give me a benefit of doubt because you don’t know the details of how this blockchain works?

It is similar though not physical like a robbery. But digitally it’s the same.

Reward pool is common fund. You and I both share it until day 7 at payout

I can make 50 posts per day. Vote them all up. Ask all my friends vote them. Then I will suck all the reward pool for myself.

Nothing will be left for you.

I can safely say that’s robbery of the reward pool.

Trouble is I can’t do that. Because if I do, others will DV me and take the potential rewards away before day 7 at payout.

That is why DV exists.

I totally understand what you are saying. I don't want it to sound like I was being judgmental, I was simply asking for your reasoning for being -in your own words - one of the biggest downvoters on Hive. You are totally free to upvote and downvote as you wish. Cheers to you and thanks for the explanation!!

This makes me laugh. You have the HP to do it and not be affected by it. Whenever I've tried that, I've ended up under a rain of DV's for a week haha.

It’s a perfectly fine personal safety decision.

Yep, that's why we keep walking. There's other ways to influence though, like setting a good example, not giving the bad players any air, or gentle suggestions, or reporting them to people like you who can punch them into next week!

I understand.

I get my share of DV too, as you can see. But obviously I can handle it.

Yes. Anything I comment or write gets automatically downvoted. I don’t mind :) Doesn’t bother me the slightest bit.

It is so interesting to read your opinion on this! I have been invited to join blurt a few times in the past few weeks but, it just seems like a lame copy of HIVE. So it is nice to read that those who flock there are those who haven't really been adding to the positive vibes on this platform. Thanks for weighing in!

0

Lame is a good way to describe it, quite apt indeed.

Many of those there talk about censorship and say that a downvote is censorship, which it is not, and that's why they don't like Hive. Usually though, it's because they were raping the reward pool in various ways and we're finally caught out and downvoted (by the community) into oblivion. And...oblivion is Blurt.

I'm going to write a post about censorship soon, I've not done one yet and that's in eight years of being on Hive. The time is now...well, soon.

Yeah that is the vibe I got from the people who reached out to me personally wanting me to join them in leaving Hive & migrating to Blurt ~ that they were dissatisfied by their rewards here on Hive and that they perceived the downvote at the source of their low rewards.

Of course gaining a bit of income from sharing on Hive is a big motivator for consistently contributing to this platform but it is definitely not the only reason to be here. Also, I think people who don't have a lot of votes or positive interactions on their posts may want to consider if the real reason is that people just aren't that interested in their content.

I am following you now and eagerly await your post about censorship!!

0

For sure gaining some reward is a big motivator, but doing it in underhanded ways isn't the way to do it. I punish that when I see it. People should be focused on enjoyment, presenting the best they can and applying passion, personality and effort. Those are the things I reward.

I saw you followed, welcome, I'll get to that post in the next week or so.

A downvote is just choosing to distribute to everyone else on the chain, instead of that one person, by returning those rewards to the reward pool. :)

It is all about perspective.

Which is gatekept by few toxic whales and thus those returns go to the top. It doesn't get distributed to the rest. Who told you that?

Hi there! Thank you! You summarized the feeling perfectly! I have been involved in blogging and social media for years and have yet to find a platform as rewarding & positive as Hive. What a beautifully written and constructed post. A wise, non-hysterical examination of what Hive means to you. And you are all that matters, your choices.
Hive's huge advantage over any other social media is that it is flexible to be whatever an individual wants it to be. This can also be a curse sometimes, but only if one allows it to be so.
Stay happy and thank you for sharing. It looks like I need to have a drift through your back catalogue now!

wow! thank you so much! The general concept for this post had been churning in my mind for a few weeks now. I was going to wait for my Hive-anniversary which is about a month away but yesterday afternoon I just got the feeling that my time to write about how much Hive means to me is now. I really appreciate your words, especially the non-hysterical part!
And I so agree, there is a lot of flexibility here on HIVE and also certain content that people tend to like here which doesn't find much traction elsewhere on the internet. It seems like the art of blogging is truly alive here on HIVE!

OH lmao you were libragardener!!!! I loved libra gardener, but I have NO idea how I missed you were the same person! I went and looked at - and joined - Blurt early on, but found it was just full of negativity and slinging shade at Hive. Hive isn't perfect, but there's a LOT of good here. There's a lot of history and drama with some of the ex-Hivers there (not all of them) that went out throwing matches behind them. I mean, if you want to go, go, but don't have a big song and dance about it. We can make up our own minds and choose to make our own Hive, setting examples for what WE want it to be.

0

0.000
avatar

Yeah Libra.Gardener was my first project here on Hive. For a while I used both accounts, LG for sharing in the Hive Garden community and this one for my more herbalism and crafty endeavors. Back then I was very shy about showing my face and I don;t think I mentioned anything about my personal life so you not connecting the dots is totally valid! Then I had an "identity crisis" I sort of lost my faith in astrology and my garden was a disaster for about a year - I wasn't sure I could call myself a Libra or a Gardener anymore. Now I feel that calendula & craft is perfect, a little bit of herbs/garden and a bit of crafts too.

And I love what you say about Blurt & Hive ~ I waffled for a while about sharing my thoughts on this topic and I am so glad I did. Yours and the other comments on this post have clarified so much about this issue. I am totally open to joining another Hive-esque platform someday but I don't see why people have to throw matches behind them - as you so precisely put it. Can't people just peacefully share on both platforms? Thanks so much for sharing your opinion, it helps a lot!

I won't be leaving Hive! I just wanted to call attention to the fact that I have been asked to join the exodus to Blurt by a number of Hive users.
and truly love to hear that there are people on Hive that will stand up to censorship ~ it is so important that people work to keep Hive a positive place to share rather than jumping ship at the first sign of censorship, or supposed censorship.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this important topic!

What a thoughtful post. Thank you for that :)

I can only speak for myself, of course, but like you, I have never experienced censorship here, nor was I particularly interested in Blurt (or any other alternative to Hive). Frankly, I couldn't imagine it, trading this place in. It's been too long, there are still so many good things to love and fight for here.

And one of the beautiful things is that you get to encounter people after years and still be discovering new voices that you resonate with, as is the case with you :) Nice to meet you, and I'm glad you're around!

Thank you too! I love how you say "there are still so many good things to love and fight for here" ~ that is exactly the spirit I was trying to capture but didn't quite know how to say. It rubs me the wrong way when people cash in all their tokens & leave over some perceived slight. If there are problems to work out in Hive I think that it is worth discussing & making changes rather than jumping ship.

It is really nice to meet you & now I will be checking out your blog. Thanks so much for your input on this topic!

Okay so Steemit existed before Hive? Very interesting! I wasn't very active on the internet before 2019 so I missed a lot during that time. I am grateful to have found Hive. And, personally have learned to keep controversial opinions to myself more so for my own mental health than anything else. I sort of doubt I would receive much backlash for sharing about those topics here on Hive, rather, I want to keep my blog a place where I share about the things that bring me joy and hope that others enjoy them too.

Thanks so much for sharing your opinion and, in general, your positive contributions here on Hive.

Great post to read.. thanks for re-blogging @meesterboom and @slobberchops else i would have missed it 😁.

For me the first time i hear of Blurt.. By the looks of it not a appealing environment.
I have not experienced any censorship on hive, some politics at most, still enjoying the stay here on hive connecting to others 😍.

Just the logo alone really discourages me! When I first heard about hive I loved the bee hive imagery it draws on. The strength of the bee hive is in all the bees working together for a greater collective. I don't think blurt can achieve that. But, if people want to join both they are free to! I personally won't be abandoning Hive anytime soon, it feels like my internet home <3

I haven’t experienced downvotes myself as well, but I’ve seen people being downvoted for dubious reasons, there are pretty wild stories out there, if you dig a little bit.
Just today I’ve noticed that a post by one of my favorite people here got downvoted by an account that is financed by one of the top witnesses. It was neither spam nor plagiarism, and no reason for downvoting has been given. The post had quite a large payout though.

I’m not a fan of the downvote function, I don’t think a community actually needs that and it can too easily been misused to censor people.
Hive is not the impeccable place I thought it to be in the beginning, but I’m super grateful for everything it has given me and I love the good people here so much.
I’ll still be here, but I did get myself a Blurt account recently, I guess I’ll just give it a try and see how the vibe is over there :)

Blurt is censored, although there are no downvotes. A coal list is shared, and the websites display alerts for these authors, and possibly more. Since I don't use this list because I manage my own, it's impossible to delegate anything other than 0 BP to me.
Hive is the place to be.

So interesting! I am learning a lot from the comments people left on this post. Thanks so much for your input!

If you are limited due to not taking part in the coal list, what is the benefit of using blurt for you? Just curious

My free delegation and voting service works on all three blockchains. It was my early presence on Blurt that gave me visibility on Hive.
Some people simply post the same content as Hive on Steem or Blurt.

Just to be clear about the "coal list" on BLurt:

  • It is a list of known plagiarists who post on Blurt.
  • Each individual user can view the list and turn it on or off for them to see it.
  • It does not block anybody on the list from showing their posts
  • It does show a warning label next to the posts of the users on the list
  • The label leaves it up to the viewer as to whether they want to view and vote on that post
  • People who get put on that list can also be taken off it if they stop acting unethically
  • It is not censorship since it does not block anybody's ability to post or be seen.

The coal list is not censorship because the decision to vote or not vote on a post is left up to the individual user viewing the post and not the front ends. There is no mechanism to censor any user on Blurt.

I've been on Blurt for 6 months and love it. I wasn't forced to go there. I went there on principle. That principle is that individual Freedom of speech and choice trumps any and all collectivist group think.

I will give credit where credit is due. When they came up with the name Hive they were really forward thinking. Users have to have that "Hive" mentality and Hive thinking to stay here. There sure are an awful lot of people on here with Stockholm Syndrome to stay here and just nod their collective heads in agreement with whatever the whales say.

Go give Blurt an honest try. Just keep the mindset that you dont automatically get a built in audience when you are there. You actually have to work to build one. Not just be friends with a whale who runs a curation trail that auto up votes everything you do.

I know content can't be censored in the blockchain. Even if blocked by API interfaces, anyone can run their own node.
I haven't tried delegating via a JSON RPC request. It should work, but I don't want to create a web page to delegate BP to me.

@droida Hey there

can you please provide proof of how Blurt is censored? Genuine question. No ego from my side. Thank you!

Is reducing visibility or preventing delegation a form of censorship? There are many interesting opinions on censorship in blockchains...

You the user can turn off the coal list which will remove that warning. It is literally no different than a user muting or blocking another user.
It's in the users hand. Not the front end and not blockchain.

When it's a user doing it is not censorship since it is their choice. or are you attempting to say that a person ignoring another person is censorship.
Freedom of speech includes the Freedom to not listen.

Also, blurt blog is the only front end that uses the coal list. No other uses it.

This isn't just a warning, it prevents you from clicking Next. How to turn this off?
I tried with another frontend a long time ago, and it also blocked delegation.

Use both platforms.

Both platforms have their pros and cons.

Rather than an exodus i prefer to have my options. I also promote blurt, yet i also promote hive. I am unattached, these are just tools for me to get to where i need to. Yet i keep one eye on the dark world dealings that does go on around here.

@calendulacraft not everything that's packaged good, or everyone that has treated you good, or an occasion that's offered you good, is truly completely good. I hope you use your discernment.

Not to pick a fight, just wanting to point out something you've written. It's better to retract such a statement of whether the platform is censorship free due to it's emoji (i admit, the emoji is immature). Yet what you stated about Blurt being censorship free just isn't true...in way the platform was created makes it so there are absolutely no mechanisms (bar the witnesses turning rogue and going ape-shit...if that does ever happen it's truly game over) for censorship on Blurt. Zero. Nada. 零.

This comment will not be well received, but someone with a sound mind has to say it.

Hoping you have a magical day!

I really enjoyed this post and your openness I've been getting downvoted for a while now by the biggest farmers on Hive

They are not even telling me why which makes no sense I've reached out to @hivewatchers and they said they can not do anything 🤔

I even reached out to @crimsonclad @steevc @theycallmedan @azircon no one's helps https://hive.blog/hive-148441/@hivewatchers/svftu9

So it's because of @steevc thanks for letting me know 🤔

I've reached out to many people who have just ignored me but that's ok 😁 all I ask is that they stop downvoting my original content for no reason what you people are doing is classed as cyber bullying 😂 and you saying that it's because of Steeve means that steevc is connected with the one who owns Hive thanks for confirming that 😎👍🏾 !LUV

You don't feel like there's any censorship here because you haven't said anything that could piss anyone off yet. Every month more people move to blurt who have experienced this and they do it because Hive is not only full of censorship but above all centralized. They tell you that downvoted people are people who abuse the pool and other fairy tales, but the truth is that downvoted people are most often people who have a different worldview and opinions than the whales here.

Downvote is a tool for centralizing influence because it allows you to deprive the opposition, i.e. people with a different worldview than the majority, of the chance to gain shares here and thus to gain HP and actively participate in the life and development of the network.

In theory, they will convince you that your vote matters, in practice it won't because if you vote for someone who is downvoted, neither you get the curator's reward nor they get the shares. In practice, no one wants to vote for downvoted people because they lose their curator's reward.

On the other hand, accounts that receive downvotes with a higher strength than the rate assigned to the post lose their reputation and if it drops below 0, all posts are hidden.

This way you can destroy anyone's profile.

They also tell you lies about there being censorship on Blurt. There is no censorship. Coal list does what it is supposed to do, which is fight spam. First of all, it does not block the possibility of receiving upvotes at all, it only blocks it on Frontends that use coal list. This means that free frontends do not have to use it.

Secondly, you cannot take away the rewards that someone received in this way.

Fourthly, there is no reputation system and you cannot permanently hide someone's posts with downvotes.

Fifth, when it comes to the coal list, NO ONE has any INTEREST in blocking accounts other than those that ACTUALLY engage in abuse, contrary to what happens on hive with downvotes. Downvotes are not only a way to deal with censorship, combat plagiarism and centralize power in the hands of like-minded people, they are also a way to manipulate the supply of the hive token.

Here are articles on the subject, why it is broken and how it works:

https://peakd.com/hive/@khrom/the-downvote-economy-how-to-steal-the-value-of-someone-s-work-and-get-rich-off-their-efforts

https://peakd.com/hive/@khrom/why-downvotes-contradict-decentralization-a-mathematical-perspective

Ending with the logo... The blurt .blog logo is solely a representation of the frontend run by the original founders of blurt. They came up with this logo and they like it. They wanted to go in the direction of a mem coin. This does not mean that everyone has them like and using because Blurt is a TRULY decentralized place unlike hive. There are 2 other frontends and each has a different logo. Blurt is a place where we believe in the principles of freedom and the free market and decentralization. As a member of this community, you can always suggest changes and no one will downvote you for them, like the author of the above-linked substantive articles on downvotes whose account was destroyed from 60 reputation to 2 and added to DV balck list just because he tells the truth about how this system works. (or maybe you se some abuse Low effort content or plagiarism there:P )?

And here you have a representation of what Hivers really think about other people who see the world differently:

We are parasites to them, dumb Humans, idiots because we see things different.

And here what hapends with official https://blurt.media channel who reposting here original content of blurt media channel:

@blurt.media they downvoting everything no matter how good and how decent.

This is another exampe of their true face.

So if you want to support that centralized full of censorship and heatred pleace, Choice is yours ;)

cheers;)

Hi, with the time I've been around and I didn't heard of you till now and it was not via Hive blockchain but from the Blurt side...
Nice to see you btw. I see you post interesting stuff with a free mindset in the background. Will nose on it from time to time.
I'm with @jin-out , you don't have to choose a side, you can use whatever you see fit, your freedom goes beyond what others stablish, doesn't it? Demonizing or elevating a certain blockchain interfaces becomes irrelevant in my humble opinion.
Fortunately you didn't have issues with the 'main stream' big whales here, but there is actually a lot of people affected by downvotes, it's a fact.
I would use whatever I think fit my needs to achieve my goals as Jin stated in his comment, no one will tell me what to do or what to think nor what blockchains I must use.
Have a nice weekend ;)

Thank you for your advice!!

I don't use to give advice, I just give my view on things, one must take its own decissions.

Best of luck to you & your writing.

I barely write but when commenting, I'm not a blogger mainly because I lack of enough free time to do it. Real life is really busy in my side.

Best wishes and nice Sunday ;)

This was brilliantly written.

I am not quite sure where this post should go.

Willing to dive into dark waters just to know something new?

Good.

I myself have some opinions about the supposed censorship issue on HIVE.

Do you have questions?

Maybe I'll answer some here based on my experience learning about blurt.

I say supposed censorship on Hive because I personally have never experienced any sort of censorship.

Ok. That's fair. Today is our lucky day. You decide if my account falls under category of being "censored". How does my account look like to you?

Also would help if you clarify what you think censorship is.

"What is censorship?"

"Is it happening?"

Was my comment hidden in your post in the public domain? What about in other front ends? Is there a front end that doesn't censor me from your end?

Reading your post and the comment section below has been very enlightening. I am still quite new to the community, and had no idea there was so much drama going on behind the scenes. So far, everyone I've interacted with on Hive has been welcoming and supportive. I love that line about Hive being a virtual hug from the internet, something we could all use some times.

Also, I think your post is very well designed, I can tell you put a lot of effort into the style of the photos. I look forward to seeing more of your posts in the future. Thank you for sharing!

Yeah the comment section is full of really interesting opinions, some who (politely) disagree with me and many who have added a lot to what I was trying to get at in the original post.

I really appreciate your words! I do put a lot of energy into making original content for Hive. Personally I haven't felt any bad vibes or been roped into too much drama here on Hive. When I compare Hive to the other social media I use I feel really well supported by this community indeed. Thanks so much for your comment!!
