Splinterlands 101 - Ep 55: Behind The Avatar @weirdbeard
Yo Yo My Sovereigns, Wattup?
Welcome to episode 55 of my weekly Splinterlands 101 podcast, with fellow @hiveaustralia members, and co-hosts of the show, @mattclarke and @giotrix
This episode, is another "Behind The Avatar" themed chat.
Who is that person playing that toon that always flogs you in ranked battles? haha
Well this theme focuses on just that, meeting the person behind the avatar.
...
In this episode, we are very excited to chat with Splinterlands team member @weirdbeard.
@weirdbeard, with his extensive radio DJ background, makes for the perfect guest, always having something to say on topic, and destroying any dead air opportunity 🤠
Being a Townhall fan myself, I thought I had a pretty good idea about who Weirdbeard was, however, as he shared his pre-Splinterlands background, he totally blew my mind.
In addition to learning where he came from, he also shares his Splinterlands vision and in depth knowledge of his role in it.
Believe me when I say, this is one episode you will not want to miss 😍

Congrats to everyone! I think this is the best show you guys have done... except that one I was on, but that goes without saying so I'll refrain from saying it, except when I said it a second ago to set up not saying. Other than that, though...
Moving on, I wanted to comment on a few things, but I just watched it for enjoyment the first time and didn't take notes so I'm re-watching it now and wanted to begin with something @weirdbeard said, around the 23 minute mark, about the game's position flipping from a crypto-defi project with a gaming element to a game with a crypto-defi element.
I feel like I've seen Splinterlands flip flopping back and forth since the beginning. The game aspect was well under way long before the defi elements really began to emerge, roughly around the time land went on sale... if memory serves (which isn't guaranteed at all), and became more focused on defi through the bull, when buzz and funding were raging. All that is to say that I think the ability to lean one way or the other is becoming inherent and will remain so, rather than it being a thing that just happened once. Having said that, however, going forward I would like to see the game aspect get higher priority than it did during the crypto-defi phase we just came out of.
Something else that got my attention was @mattclarke discussing the ponzi/pyramid accusations I've dealt with in my own life. The example I like to use usually revolves around work tools. I.e., If I own a delivery service and need a new vehicle for deliveries, but have to buy in a seller's market, I may temporarily lose money on paper, but I'm still earning from it by working it. I see my Splinterlands collection through the same lens. Some cards I buy extras of to rent or flip, but most of my collection gets used, even if it's in a botted alt, so it doesn't matter if I "overpaid" for some of them. They've been earning and will continue to do so as long as I want to hang on to them.
At 41:20'ish @weirdbeard spoke of story line development. This is a key element to some of the projects I've yet to successfully initiate. I'd like a system in place that uses bots we can spend tokens on to write the player's story outside of battles and even narrate how some battles play out. The more you spend the more fleshed out the story gets, such that each player has a log of activity within Splinterlands. From that we can canonize the stuff we like. Quick example... from the "journal" tab once can choose a battle they enjoyed and have the bot view the match and write out the basic actions, i.e., lightning dragon attacks chaos agent/miss. Chaos agent backfires lightning dragon/2 dmg. Once there's a transcript of the battle the player can flesh it out himself or run it through the bot again to get more adjectives and excitement. I'd like to have a form similar to the Report card by @kiokizz, that puts out reports periodically so each player can essentially build their own story starring themselves about their adventures in Splinterlands.
I have to go to work so I'm gonna wrap this up for now, but there's a still a lot I hope to get back around to comment on. This was a great show!
Hey man, good to have your input once again, it's always a good read 😍
I Love your idea about a journal feature, and as I was reading it, my first thought was the report card layout so that you could make a post of it, then you covered that too, and I was like, yep, we're on the same page here 😎
