USAID

It was originally founded as an aid organization and has been used most substantially in that capacity since at least the 60s, but especially since the early 2000s when Bush greatly expanded its public health aid to Africa.

What I do see frequently is people blindly criticizing USAID, or blindly accepting that any of these critiques are at all serious and not just narratives pushed to manufacture consent.

Many of the accusations of its involvement in regime change since the Cold War are either overblown or just not true. Yes, it got up to some shenanigans in Cuba about 10 years ago, but it really wasn't what I think would be fairly called a program of regime overthrow.

However, NOW it is changing in kind, rather than degree. Because the programs within the USAID that were more focused on political interference rather than aid, development, and public health are being kept while all the aid is being systematically destroyed.

USAID has done a lot of good work to supply life-saving resources to struggling people around the world,

USAID was created to be (and still is) a tool for the US to exercise imperial power over smaller nations,

are not in contradiction, and it is important not to obfuscate the latter when criticizing Musk and Trump's attacks on it. That's all.
