Dongle Is Better
I think the dongle is better since I feel a lot of phones cheap out on headphone audio anyway. Even if my phone had a port, I would probably just use a dongle for the DAC and never the port itself.
Even if my phone had a jack, if a dongle was better, I would still use the dongle — that's just what I'm saying. And that would be a thing for sure — the first thing any company would cheap out on to make a phone cost less.
Or if I heard anything static or popping sounding — which I have. Very sensitive IEMs.
I got a Google DAC dongle for my phone since the Apple one was being quiet (even though I'm in the US, wtf), and that also has popping sounds that happen at times — since it doesn't have, I think it's called low noise floor support or something? (IDK, I'm not super audiophile. I just have ChiFi earbuds that I don't wanna hear electronic sounds from.)
I was getting popping sounds on my desktop with the Apple DAC, and it wasn't even due to the DAC — it was due to crosstalk from a wireless mouse charging pad Logitech made.
Wild stuff happens with IEMs.
