The New Frontier

There’s something poetic about the name.

It hits right at the soul of what we’ve been trying to build — & who we’ve been trying to build it for.

Frontier isn’t just a new format in Splinterlands.

It’s a signal. A declaration. An open gate.

Before Anything Else: Frontier

frontier
noun /ˈfrʌn.tɪər/ (UK) /ˈfrʌn.tɪr/ (US)

Definitions:

  1. A border between two countries or territories
Example: Frontier Format creates a bridge between the world of traditional card games & the untapped realm of web3.

  2. The extreme limit of settled land beyond which lies wilderness
Example: In Splinterlands, Frontier is the unexplored terrain—open, wild & full of potential for new players.

  3. A limit of knowledge or achievement in a particular field
Example: Frontier Format represents the next frontier of gaming design, where fun leads and crypto follows.

  4. An undeveloped area or sphere of activity offering opportunity for exploration or innovation
Example: With zero cost to play & intuitive mechanics, Frontier opens up a massive new frontier for onboarding & experimentation.

  5. (Historical or figurative) A zone of transition between different cultures, ideologies, or ways of life
Example: Frontier lives at the intersection where crypto-skeptics, traditional TCG lovers & digital collectors finally converge.

Origin:

From Middle English frontiere, from Old French frontiere (“front line, border”), from front (“forehead, front”), from Latin frons

What Is Frontier Format?

It’s free to play.

No Rebellion. No Modern. No Chaos Legion armies.

Just raw strategy & deck-building within a curated ruleset.

You don’t need assets.

You don’t need SPS.

You don’t need to understand crypto.

Hell, you don’t even need to believe in NFTs.

All you need is a little curiosity, some competitive spirit & the hunger to explore the modern TCG frontier.

Why “Frontier” Is The Perfect Name

This is exactly what it sounds like: the edge of something new.

A wild & open land, still being defined, still full of promise.

For years, we’ve fought to balance two worlds:

  • A passionate card game community that wants smart gameplay, fair matchups & real competition

  • A web3 vision that dares to reimagine ownership, identity & value in gaming

Well, guess what.

Frontier sits right at the intersection of the two.

This is where the crypto-averse & the crypto-curious can meet the Splinterlands faithful. Where TCG veterans & idle gamers can explore a new ecosystem, without pressure, without a wallet, without buy-in.

This isn’t just a new format — it’s a new frontier for how games can look, feel & belong to the players who live them.

And let’s be honest:

This is the funnel we’ve been waiting for.

Group 9.png

Not Just A Format. A Fulcrum.

Frontier can be our answer to:

  • onboarding at scale

  • teaching strategy before sales

  • letting fun lead the pitch

  • building trust before transactions

It’s fast.

It’s fair.

It's fun.

And it’s familiar enough for gamers to feel at home — yet different enough to spark intrigue.

This is a place where someone can fall in love with the game before they ever think about crypto.

And once they do? They might just stick around – for the ecosystem, the community, the story.

Frontier operates as a gateway for those who've been blind — by choice, by doubt or by design — to everything web3 has to offer.

And it meets them with gameplay first, not some whitepaper.

So What Comes Next?

We lean in.

We build educational tools, onboarding funnels & competitive ladders around this thing.

We invite the outside world in — not to buy Splinterlands, but to play it.

And if we do it right?

The rest will follow.

This isn’t about extracting value.

It’s about creating it — through play, through people, through moments.

Moments that build trust. That earn loyalty. That create memories worth coming back for.

The kind of moments that hook you before you even know what SPS is.

Frontier is that spark.

Our spark.

It’s our campfire.

Let's gather 'round it.

Let’s see where this trail leads.

Welcome to Frontier.

That would be an exciting new mode and great name choice. Is that what "basic" mode is going to be like? Could be a great way to bring in new players for sure.

Thanks UM! Yea, this is "basic mode"- the team has put out the offer for the community to suggest a rename and this is my take. Reckon the free-to-play format is our best marketing opportunity yet!

Love it!! This just might be the frontrunner for me. Not just a cool and appropriate name, but you bring the receipts to back it up. Hmmm... 'The Frontier'... or 'Basic Mode'... VERY tough choices!!

I agree. Frontier is a great name for it. Crypto is breaking new ground and so is Splinterlands. Splinterlands is one of the few Crypto games that has not only stood the test of time but thrived out here on the Crypto Frontier. It is only appropriate that our entry level mode to the game be called the Frontier
