I was in a Wax Twitter space and we somehow got on the topic of wrestling.
The WWE Sports Entertainment wrestling
We talked about some of the craziest storylines from our era of wrestling that we grew up in and some of our favorite brands from those times.
And one thing was for sure, Vince McMahon and the other people writing those storylines knew how to entertain us!
WWE is a platform that allows wrestlers to launch some of the biggest personal brands in the entertainment world. The WWE has created SUPERSTARS like
- Hulk Hogan
- Shawn Micheals
- Stoned Cold
- The Rock
- John Cena
And the list goes on...
One thing that I noticed about the biggest wrestling stars and the guys that I remember from my childhood is that they all cut really good promos.
Yes, they had great moments wrestling in the ring, but another part of what made me want their t-shirts and want to play with them on video games was the entertainment value they provided when they got a chance to get on the microphone and say wild stuff with the camera focused on them.

I do understand that these Promos were made for tv, but as I watched more promos from my favorite era of wrestling I started to realize that there was a formula for their monologues that a lot of us web3 creators may be able to use within our own brands and content.
This isn't an official guide. This is only @bigtakosensei observations after watching a few hours' worths of some really dope wrestling promos.
But from what I've reverse-engineered here's:
How to Cut Legendary Promos for Web3 Creatives!
Things to keep in Mind:
A lot of these monologues were performed while in the ring discussing a topic that the wrestler was dealing with in the storyline or after an interviewer has asked the wrestler a question about a topic or particular rival he's to have a match with soon.
Consistencies I noticed in promos / Rules:
- Promo monologues seem to usually be between 1:30 - 3:30 minutes long.
- Some may be shorter or longer but a lot of other ones that I noticed seemed to be pretty short. Most likely to make room for matches (content)
- Speak in the 3rd Person
- You have to say your own name at least 3 times.
- Ex) Hulk Hogan (The Hulkster), The Rock, and Stoned Cold say their names quite a bit in their promos...
- You have to say your own name at least 3 times.
- Talk some crap about your competitors
- Some of the best promos are when guys shittin on the competition and talk crap about all of their opponents.
- Ex) The Rock and Stoned Cold we're legendary at making fun of the other wrestlers gimmicks.
- Ex) Booker T was good and pointing out differences between himself and other guys and stating his accomplishments.
- Some of the best promos are when guys shittin on the competition and talk crap about all of their opponents.
- Tell people how you plan to handle the issue at hand
- You've got to tell the audience why you're gonna come out on top of your challenge or your opponent. Tell them what the outcome will be.
- Let people know how your finisher will crush and destroy your opponent. Or let people know why your "defining personality traits will allow you to overcome the challenge at hand"
- Drop a Joke!
- Drop a joke if that's your brand, and you can pull it off. If you're brand is about swagg, say something cool. If your brand is spooky, say something scary. If your brand is freaky, say something to make people uncomfortable.
- Some of the best promos are by guys who know how to get a particular emotion out of their audience.
- Ex) The Rock - funny
- Ex) Shawn Micheals - funny, Non-apologetic
- Ex) Hulk Hogan - Intensity
- Ex) Gold Dust - Uncomfortable, Cringy
- Ex) John Cena - Inspiration, Humble
- Interact with the audience or camera directly!
- Some of the best promo moments are when the wrestler did things that allowed the crowd to get involved and chants certain phrases.
- Ask the audience questions or have parts of the monologue where it's obvious they should insert one of your brand catchphrases.
- Ex) The Rock - "And Millions!", "come back to (Hosting City)"
- Ex) Stoned Cold - "What!", "Stoned Cold Said So!"
- Ex) Daniel Bryan - "Yes!"
- End the promo with an epic branded closing statement
- Some of the best promos close with the wrestler's closing catchphrase that everyone knows and loves
- Ex) The Rock - "If you smellll what the Rock is cooking! "
- Ex) Stoned Cold - "And that's the bottom line, cause Stoned Cold said So!"
- Ex) Hulk Hogan - "What you gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you!"
- Ex) Bret Hart - "The best there was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be!"
- Ex) Rick Flair - "Woo!"
- Some of the best promos close with the wrestler's closing catchphrase that everyone knows and loves
With all this said I wouldn't cut your promo exactly like a 80's or 90's wrestling superstar. If you choose to use this format let, it be an inspiration that you use to wrap your branding around.
But I think fitting this template into certain content will be a fun way to connect with an audience and build excitement and engagement with our brands as content creators.
If you made it to the end of the list , here's some bonus tips!
Bonus Promo Monologue Enhancers:
- Have a name you consistently use for the outgroup
- Ex) The Rock - "Jabroni"
- Have a name consistently used for your tribe
- Ex) The Rock - "Millions and Millions"
- Ex) Hulk Hogan - "Hulkamaniacs"
- Scream!
- People like the energy when you pick your volume up 10% above your usual tone. Just remember to keep it to 10% above, anything more can get weird if not done correctly.
- Repeat your punchlines
- If you fell like a certain punchline is really good or might fly over peoples heads repeat it a couple of times.
- Disrupt the interviewer
- Cut the interviewer off mid sentence when itβs time to get your point across then rant.
- Some wrestlers go as far as to telling the interviewer to shut up! I obviously wouldnβt do this in real life unless previously discussed or you all are acting a script but it makes for interesting promos for sureβ¦
