Temporary relocation due to security issues in Kaduna

Whelp, that escalated really fast. Things are really getting out of hand and so we've decided to move south.

Remember 9 days ago, I published a post about making a short trip to buy fuel for my car. Just yesterday evening, that area was victim to terrorist attack.

I woke up this morning to a short but scary message from @young-boss-karin.

Crazy thing is, I do stay around Sabo area. In fact, I already made plans to go to Sabo on Sunday but obviously, that has been cancelled.

In a matter of days, I've had to cancel a 3 hour trip to Abuja and now a 15-minute drive to Sabo. What do both events have in common? Terrorist attacks.

After getting the news from Karina, I decided to check Twitter because it is honestly the only reliable source of information. I was watching the video clips and reading the tweets in fear, while also hoping that it was an April Fool's day hoax.

It wasn't a joke, the images and videos are gruesome. People were running for their lives, armed terrorists were shooting rounds at people, and this happened only a couple of minutes drive away from me.

I was sat on the loo while going through the clips, seeing people scared shitless. This is such a horrible situation to be in, people are losing their lives and getting traumatised.

Temporarily moving South

Due to the current situation in Kaduna, we've decided to temporarily move South. It is going to be a tedious experience but it is something that we must do.

The process of going South is already shaping up to be one of the most stressful experiences of our life. We're trying to move as fast as possible, so in 10-14 days, we should be on our way.

Right now, the only thing keeping us in Kaduna is my wife's passport processing but we got information that it should be ready by next week. Even if it isn't processed on time, we'll still leave and have it sent to us.

We've set our sights on Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as our next destination. it is a place that I'm mildly familiar with because I was raised there.

The plan is still to exit the country by September but for now, we have to protect ourselves and ensure we're still alive when the time to exit comes around.

House hunting

We've already started our preliminary search to find a house. My sister has already contacted people in Port Harcourt to help us find somewhere that we can pitch our tent in.

The cost of rent in Port Harcourt is slightly higher than it is in Kaduna but that's just something we have to live with. On top of that, the cost of living is also higher in the South but since we're a small household, the effect will be mild.

In Kaduna, our house rent is around $700-750 range per year for a two-bedroom flat. However, in Port Harcourt, we'll be paying that same amount for a much smaller apartment with one bedroom.

I don't intend to spend more than a couple of months in Port Harcourt but in any case, I hope I find good neighbours like the people I meet in Kaduna.

In the North, the average person is very laid back and not confrontational. In Port Harcourt, people tend to be loud and obnoxious. In any case, we'll be fine because we're just around for a short time.

Crypto Funded

We live off crypto, so naturally, our movement is going to be fully funded by crypto. My investment activities will take a couple of steps back for a while but that's just life.

First of all, we have to waybill some of our stuff to Port Harcourt, and that will be somewhat expensive. I considered selling the car but that won't be possible in the short time frame we're working with, so we'll have to pay someone to move it for us.

On top of that, we also have a refrigerator, two air conditioners, and television to move. We'll be selling or giving away our washing machine, gas cooker, and all our furniture.

We got food yesterday and all of that will be going to the orphanage near our area. We'll also drop some of our furniture and clothes there.

We're trying to move only the necessary stuff to Port Harcourt and I reckon that may cost us upwards of $600 for just moving alone. On top of that, we still have to pay house rent, and then move all our stuff to the house.

My Sister, Julliet, has offered us a place to bunk temporarily while we sort ourselves out in Port Harcourt. So we'll be staying with her temporarily, while we get our shit together.

We also have to pay for travel expenses that include lodging in Kano State, a flight to Port Harcourt, and stuff that should push us back about $500 in total.

So we're looking at a grand total of roughly $1850 in total if you include rent and all things in between. This is a shit ton of money that we have to raise from selling off our crypto assets.

It feels surreal that we're actually running for our lives at this moment. I am in shock and disbelief at the way things have become in Kaduna, and while the signs have been there for a while, I honestly hoped it would take a couple of months before getting to this point.
