How Force Field brought be down to earth. 6f under, actually. - A humbling brawl battle
Prologue - Click here for Battle Link
A few months ago, I upgraded most of my cards in order to brawl on Gold Leauge - now called Expert level I think? Well, whatever it's called - it's a lot more challenging than Silver/Intermediate Level.
Now, there is one ability that I never had to really think about before, and that is Force Field.
There just aren't many cards with 5 attack or higher on lower levels, except for a gladiator or other bloodlust-monster from time to time. So I never really thought about it, nor did I use it in a strategy - until my team got totally destroyed by it today.
Set-Up
Reach for everyone, no healing, 56 Mana - a pretty nice set-up to put together a great team. I chose all the high rollers - the lowest was the gladiator with "only" 3 attack points. Coerl Lurker as a swift tank, after that double-piercing damage, then a reviver with dispel and inspire, opportunity gladiator, opportunity poison, opportunity with shield - that team would've swiped the floor with anything, or so I though. But the opponent...
First - Arkemis the Bear. Extra armor, halving damage, and the force field.
Second - Grund. Double attack and trample (with extra reach due to the ruleset)
Third - Sneaking Gladiator with double attack.
Fourth - poison scavenger
Fifth - Taunting with Forcefield
Sixth - high ranged damage with stun
At first glance I though - easy! Little did I know...
Round 1
And yes, it would've been a very quick game - if I hadn't chosen Hellondale. Thanks to her "Inspire", 4 of my 6 monsters now had 5 or more Attack-Poins - activating the Forcefield. That means that Arkemis absorbed a lot of damage, each attack on him was only 1 (due to void), so a total of 4 damage instead of 18! 4 instead of 18!!!!! I mean - seriously????
Oh, and wait for it - all my Opportunity monsters attack the Slipspawn, and only Isgald did 4 damage. The Slipspawn got away with 6 damage instead of 15.
Meaning, in total the Forcefield reduced 33 Damage points down to 10. Impressive, isn't it?
On top of that, I lost the Lurker in round 1 already. Of course, it gave Katrelba a bloodlust-bonus.
Round 2
I got some hope when Isgald got the kill for the Splipspawn, but honestly it wasn't much left. It got a little bit interesting after Hellondale was killed and the Inspire went away - that was at the end of round 2. Now I had two monsters that could go through the Forcefield, plus the Deeplurker would attack the weakest enemy without hindering FF.
Round 3
Arkemis went down in Round 3, and Katrelba was poisoned. But Grund was still too strong, and I survived with only 2 monsters with 1 and 2 LP respectively. Katrelba didn't surive, but that was it. I totally lost this one.
Conclusion
I still have to learn a lot here on Gold/Advanced level. In my post about the Ghost-Card Tournament I said the same about Diamond/Expert-Level - but honestly, I should first learn all about the level I'm currently playing in. I was a little cocky with my team, and it wasn't too bad, but I did not account for Forcefield, and that is definitely a learning experience.
The good thing is, that I now have a great example on how to use Forcefield correctly in a match - bad thing is, I don't have Arkemis at Gold level. Might have to invest some DEC. Another one for the wish-list!
FF is an extremely powerful ability if used correctly, like @zactian did in this case - very well played, congratulations and thank you for the teaching!
