Captain Fellblade (SPLINTERLANDS) Art Contest

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well. In this installment, I'm featuring this character. I saw the letter and loved it, and while searching for information about her in Splinterlands, I found out she's an infamous pirate.

Personally, I really like strong-willed female characters, and very few of them catch my eye, so I decided to create her my way.

REFERENCE / ORIGINAL ART FROM @SPLINTERLANDS

I started by sketching the body. For the pose, I imagined her sitting on the edge of a cliff on an island, striking a flirtatious pose. I believe that just because a female character is strong doesn't mean she isn't feminine and attractive, so I decided on this pose.

I always draw the silhouette of the body first to know how the clothes will fit or how to design them. I don't have much experience drawing costumes, so it gets a bit complicated if I don't draw the silhouette first. Many other artists use this same approach, although there are also people who draw the clothes straight away.

After creating the silhouette, I begin drawing her clothes, trying to be faithful to the character's concept. I took the creative liberty of modifying some details, such as the shoulder pads, gloves, sleeves, and the shape of the hood.

For my part, I kept what I left out of the concept, for example, the hood, the corset, the gems she wears as a brooch, and the corset.

All of this was to make my work a little easier and to complete the costume, since the body isn't complete in the letter, and I had to imagine things to complete it. Then I outlined with India ink and cleaned up.

After outlining, I applied the base colors for the landscape and the character. The skin tone was a light pink, the cape and dress were colored dark blue, but I tried to keep it as light as possible because the top layer will be a different color, and the belt and fabric underneath the dress will be a light gray, and the boots a light yellow. After that, I applied other layers of other colors.

Something that characterizes me is that, at least with colors, I rarely use shades of the same color to darken. Instead, I try to use complementary colors or purple for the shadows, depending on what type of work I'm doing.

For example, with light skin, I use a pink or yellow base depending on the skin tone. Then, to remove some of the paleness, I use orange, and for areas of the skin that require darkness, I use purple or green.

After finishing the character, I moved on to the landscape. It's not the best drawing I've done so far, and colors aren't my strong suit either. The quality of what I currently have helps a lot. I'm also in the process of creating a style or adapting to one I feel more comfortable with.

But I'm clear about redesigning the character for a new occasion, so I treated this drawing as a rough sketch for a better drawing. Something that happens to me very often as a draftsman is that I need to do a mini sketch first to be clear about the design, composition, and so on.

It's not easy for me to make everything completely imaginary, so stay tuned for a new upcoming installment where the final design of this character will be, thanks for taking a few minutes to read my post.

There’s no greater feeling than being inspired by random things and characters and bringing it to life. Amazing job friend and thanks for sharing your beautiful work with us.
