Larry Is Alive #244 January 18, 2024: I Am Alive Challenge

Hello everyone and warm welcome to my Larry hunt for thursday the 18th day of January, 2024. The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles took a huge step towards reaching the last 16 in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over hosts Ivory Coast in Group A. The Super Eagles have now leapfroged the Elephants of Ivory Coast to go second in Group A but are howeo behind leaders Equatorial Guinea, who beat Guinea-Bissau (4-2) earlier on in the day, on head-to-head record. Meanwhile, the Ivorian national team are in danger of exiting the tournament, on home soil, if they lose their final game to Equatorial Guinea.

Currently, the Black Stars of Ghana are playing against the Pharaohs of Egypt in a make or mar match for both teams. Ghana lost their opening game (1-2) to Cape Verde. Thus, a win tonight is the only way to boost their chances of qualifying to the next round. The Pharaohs of Egypt drew (2-2) with Mozambique and thus are in search of their first win in the tournament. Let's see who comes out tops at the end of the day.

Larry then veers off to have a look at today in #history.

Larry begins his look at today in history from Germany. He finds out that on this day in 1871, the North German state of Prussia, having won three successful wars, formed the German Empire, which was a product of diplomacy rather than a public outpouring of nationalist sentiment.

From Germany, Larry goes to Sierra Leone. He finds out that on this day in 2001, Sierra Leone's civil war was officially declared over; more than 50,000 people were estimated to have perished in the conflict, and another 2,000,000 were displaced.

From Sierra Leone, Larry goes to the USA. He finds out that on this day in 1991, Martin Luther King, Jr., Day was first celebrated as a national holiday.

From the USA, Larry goes to the world of Olympics. He finds out that on this day in 1983, the International Olympic Committee formally reinstated the gold medals of American athlete Jim Thorpe, who won the decathlon and pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics in Stockholm but was later stripped of his medals due to accusations that he was not an amateur athlete.

From the world of Olympics, Larry goes to Australia. He finds out that on this day in 1944, Paul Keating, the Australian Labour Party leader and Prime Minister from 1991 to 1996, was born in Sydney.

Finally, Larry rounds off his look at today in #history also from the world of exploration. He finds out that during this month in 1912, **British explorer Robert Falcon Scott **and four members of his expedition reached the South Pole, only to discover that Roald Amundsen had arrived a month earlier; Scott and his men died while attempting to return to their base camp.

Having seen all these pieces of historical events, Larry zooms off to begin his daily deliveries.
