POSH PETS art dilemma

avatar
(Edited)

Last time I mentioned that I had found an artist on fiverr to do the POSH PETS NFTs, well, turns out it wasn't much of an artist but more of someone tracing images and turning them into vector drawings. Of course this wasn't mentioned anywhere on his profile and the reviews were generally well all over his page, but I was expecting that he'd at least draw them himself even with references. I'm not up to speed these days on apps that exist that can make it easier to do this but I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort of tools that you can just run an image through and it would turn them into the final product after some touches in the end I suppose.

Now this makes it harder to decide on what to do next as I can't just feed him references of different breeds and pets from the internet as they'd be exact copies. Meaning that if @poshtoken were to sell these, even if I don't profit from it directly myself it would still mean that someone's image of their pet is being sold for profit without permission. Luckily the "test" image I used at first was of @hiddenblade's golden retriever.

Result:

I haven't accepted the delivery yet but as it wasn't that costly I'm just going to go ahead and do so as I can't be bothered explaining that I wasn't expecting it to be traced. This wasn't the only image so I'm not just assuming, the other was spot on similar as well as these two examples.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against them being traced per se, I like the outcome and I think this style would be nice for POSH PETS first NFT drop. I just won't have enough images for all the breeds and references I'd want included that I own myself or have asked permission for to be used for the NFT idea.

So my options now are these, and I'd appreciate the communities input on how to move forward next:

  1. Find an artist who's more expensive but illustrates and draws them in a similar style himself, meaning no tracing or straight copying from others images and pets.

  2. Find an artist on Hive would can trace similarly to this fiverr artist. Then ask Hivers if they would be open to share their favorite pictures of their pets to be used for the POSH PETS NFT. This could also be a great idea cause if your picture is chosen you'd have your pet as an NFT in many different forms and variants existing on the Hive blockchain forever, but since it's a community project I'd rather not offer royalties or something like that for the pets that would be traced into vector art like the example above. Unless of course the community prefers that then I could take it into account. The reason I'd rather want an artist on Hive who could do this instead of paying the above artist on Fiverr is that I don't think this is something that requires a lot of work so why not pay someone on Hive who has the same skills rather than someone outside who I thought was an artist and wouldn't just trace them.

Either way, let me know what you think.

  • Find an artist who's more expensive and draws them from scratch.

or

  • Wait for an artist on Hive who can trace images from Hivers into the same style.

I personally like the second idea more to be honest, maybe for future drops we can do something more artistic/cartoonish/etc but the realistic looking one looks pretty cool in my opinion for the alpha drop.

Let me know what you think, though!

PS! Payment would occur through @poshtoken to keep it nonprofit, though I wouldn't mind fronting the liquids to pay the artist instantly until the account has gathered more itself.

Unfortunately you may find some fakers on Fiverr. It's good to read about their reviews and comments a bit deeper before hiring them.

Yeah this one only had good reviews, no one even mentioned that they were just being traced as a complete copy from the reference.

Probably none of them may have cross checked the work.

When you mentioned about artist not tracing the picture and doing it from scratch, I thought of @djynn immediately. :)

Also, I think there are some vector artists on Hive... I hope they see this post.

This was the artist/art style I thought would be perfect for this project when I first heard about it.

Although he is not on HIVE. It looks like he is very busy with his business as well. I would love to join the project if I can draw like him. I'm not confident if I can produce as much or as fast as you need or create accessories and clothes for them.
It would be so cool though…if I can do it😭

I do like your second idea. We might have some good artists here as well. And it would be good to hire people from within Hive.

Hopefully Hive could serve as freelancing media as well in the future. But yeah we do need to have an advertising feature for our jobs in order to get bids on it here.

Yeah something like Fiverr shouldn't be difficult to set up, especially with smart contracts coming up in the near future it would make the middleman fee that holds the payment until both parties have agreed as small as possible. Fiverr and other options would have no chance against those fees minus card or paypal fees on top of it since hive transactions are feeless.

Not to mention immutable reviews and reputation.

That just looks like a bit of photoshop work to remove the background followed by some posterizing effects. At the risk of overconfidence, I could almost do that in GIMP. In fact, give me a few minutes...

lol I share the overconfidence with you, my first thought was "i could probably learn to do that as well", but unfortunately won't have the time for this project.

The cleanup on GIMP is not working as well as I had hoped, but the fact remains that I could do this with a little more work.

I think @ebingo is pretty good at tracing images. Yeah, some apps do the same thing but most of these digital art creators work from scratch and it takes a lot of their time.
Bonne courage!

@acidyo I am really happy to see that you care so much about your project and also about the potential effects of someone tracing the sample pet pics you provide. I wanted to create a low polygon Avatar for myself sometime ago and researched how to do that. I found that many people just use some images and triangulate over them with photoshop tools. Since I did not want to do that, I created my own from scratch, The method will not be suitable here of course for your project since it takes lot of time. I personally like your second option - I think Hive community memeber will be very happy to share their pet pics and someone on Hive can turn them into art. As you say, the pets would be immortal in a way and exist on Hive blockchain forever. What better way to pay a tribute to a loving companion....
Just my two cents. My passion being wildlife photography, I can relate to this option more.

Your idea is possible, I want it to be true. Because each pet picture taken can be converted to something else. There will be many people who take pictures and turn them into works of NFT

I think those pets should be less meh. Because not unique uncool.

IMO something like Pokemons are better. Poshmons :D "catch them all" share content for catching Poshmons. Thats cool.

And IMO we have enough art people in the community to generate then or Fiverr/Upwork and so on.

I think making it more community orientated and involved is the best way to go for something like this.

Posh it up even more and open the doors.

Contest for the art community at large. Must share their work on social media and get the word out. Those that get a high number of comments/engagement/shares make it into the final round where you pick what you need for the project.

Winners get a split of whatever you would have spent on paying for a single artist to do all the work. Along with there art being an NFT. Plus whatever fringe benefits those that enter end up getting (voters, engagement, followers, and so forth.)

I like the idea, especially a version of it, but not sure if having different art styles for the alpha drop would look good. The other issue is that there will need to be traits/layers of different things on top of the pets that will be generated at random when minting. So will definitely need a dedicated artist for that part and not sure how well that would go if some of the styles are way too different from the rest or the one creating the accessories/clothes/etc.

I like his opinion. Maybe thanks to such contests you will discover many dedicated artists.

This sounds like a lot of work to complete many different pet designs, but I know that the first person that comes to my mind is @baptisttadg. That’s who did my logo. They do some pretty incredible drawings on paper of animals… plus they can digitize and turn them into unique mascot looking images. Perhaps this is the artist on Hive that could assist with the creation of your idea for POSH PETS.

I really hope so and have a feeling the answer will be yes. I get excited any time I see a new post from them. Always so well-crafted and just aesthetically pleasing af. A whole collection of pets in their style would be something of value.

@acidyo I am an artist and I would love to participate in this project, I love drawing in vector, you can see all the works on my profile. However, my style can be adapted to the required needs. I'd love to participate, I'm available. If you want I can also make a test drawing. Very nice idea.

One of these days I'll get to making some NFT's. I have some ideas of things but this pet one is pretty cool! I think it would be good to have it on Hive to see if there is something good our folks here can produce instead of bringing it to Fiverr. I know there are people on here that I follow that are trying to get into NFT making, though not pet related.

In my opinion, the best option is to get a hive artist who can recreate this style of drawing, which does not require, of course, the exact tracing of the reference image. I wish you much success! <3

interesting proposal, I quite liked the image is a bit realistic, what I understood is that you want something more artistic, I would also like to see the results, success ...

Hello @acydio, I was thinking that you would have to make a post asking for artists and with specific terms that they have to do so their entry will be participating (something like: vector style, link to reference or their photos preferred, steps, long etc). But I don't know if this idea would works.
What I know is you can make a little team of artists (maybe 2-3 people, I'm not sure, depends how many nfts you want to create and the deadline) who can work together.
I'm an digital illustrator and designer so I would like to be part of this project, it would be a honor for me, you can ask me for a drawing example because I don't have in my blog vector style, so I can draw it. I like to draw with vectors too.
Here on Hive there are many artists who can help with this project so I prefer your second idea (looking for artists on Hive).
Thanks for make this post and ask for our opinions.

Dear acidyo, Just a side note :
There is a recent AI graphic tool that can derive a picture into other one called IC-GAN. Moreover it has pre-trained models for a lot of dogs races. I mean you can then generate infinite unique dog pictures. Example : from the initial dog picture of @hiddenblade, i generated, in a couple of minutes the three following ones:

replicate-prediction-kk4df3pszzbuviuci7nvzp63ri.pngreplicate-prediction-2ijf4l5qxrd4to2ezxnfyvumau.png
replicate-prediction-yvwornljbvhs5pjlcnfdl4havq.png

No credit to me for these exmples, i can't draw a straight line correctly, This was just to keep you informed of the recent tech rising nowadays. I used a free demo online (https://replicate.ai/arantxacasanova/ic_gan). Afterwards, it's a matter for some other algorythms to transform these pictures into vector style art via some smart filtering. A couple of members of the Alien Hive Community might be well knowledgeable in that area.
But honestly, asking real artist is probably still more valuable and respectful to our humanity than engaging machines for such project.
In that respect, for Sharing our pet's pictures, you may launch incentive via the LIL community initiative on Hive who is building a copyright free picture sharing library.

I like the second idea too.

I think the realistic ones are much better, by the way. We have so much in the NFT world that's a cartoon style. It's probably going to be reversing direction soon 😂

@kevmcc is a good artist, but I'm not sure if he would be interested in doing animals

I have nothing to say. HHhaha i don't know the context on why your hunting artist on fiverr. But noice job noticing it was traced. If you ever accept it. Besure to rate him what you honestly think and tell him to improve his skills instead of tracing.
