Vision Of Empathy
Adon is a poor, beautiful girl from a poor background. She has been rejected by people around the village just because of her poor background. In the village of Owo, they only mingle with those rich or average. The poor only mingle with themselves, but Adon's family's level of poorness has been a serious case. She barely ate, and her parents only struggled to put food on their table.
Mr. Emma has been a great farmer who has not used his farming talent to make money. He gives to people, and this alone made him the poorest ever. The community members rejected him just because of his poor life but would always expect gifts from him. His wife, on the other hand, has this habit of free giving. She does not leave her farmlands without giving someone yam, even when that person is richer than her family. They do not look at the poor aspect of their lives and have never, for once, begged for food, even though they hardly eat. They can spend the last yam giving to anybody, leaving their stomach empty.
“Dad!” Adon, who was anxious, called out.
“Yes, my daughter,” Mr. Emma answered.
“Why are you giving to those who are rich when we have nothing to eat?” Adon asked.
“It's because I love giving even though I'm hungry. I just love it as it has been part of my life", Mr. Emma replied.
In anger, Adon left.
Meanwhile, there was a secret room in which Mr. Emma restricted everyone from entering except himself. He entered that room once a year, but no one had figured out what was in that room. One fateful day, he fell sick. Since there was no money to treat him, he was given native herbs, and his family members rejected him. Even his younger brother, who has been farming in his farmlands, rejected him just because of his level of poverty. “I'm not going. Let him die. How would I visit him when he does not want to be rich? He gave out what was supposed to make him rich to people, and those people turned out to become richer through his gifts for them. Maybe he has been caused," his younger brother said.
“Big brother, please confess to what you have done,” Emma's younger brother, who managed to visit him, said to his brother.
“Are you saying I did something wrong?” Emma asked.
“Yes, brother. You have what would make you richer than anyone, but then you just refused to get richer; instead, you would give what you have to people while you starve yourself," he said.
“You are right," Adon's mom replied.
“I have been patient enough, thinking all shall be well, but the more I kept hoping, the worse he became. Although he had also tried for you as a brother"," she continued.
“He has tried, but I can't help him presently as I have other things to face right away," Emma's younger brother said.
The news of Emma's health got to the reach of the villagers. Some said he should just die instead of starving himself and his family, while some went to Emma's house to visit him.
“I wish I had enough; I would have taken you to the clinic," one of the villagers whom Emma has helped greatly said. Others just hissed and left.
“Adon, please, just leave me alone. I'm about to visit my ancestors. I think it's time to go to the other side of the world, Emma said to his daughter.
“I can't leave you alone, Daddy. The world may reject you, but I will not reject you. Although you have not tried for me as a daughter, you are my dad and have taught me so many things in life that I can never forget," Adon said.
Emma tried to look for means to send Adon out of his way, but the more he tried, the more she drew closer. His sickness grew tougher. When Adon had gone out to seek food, Mr. Emma opened his safe locker. He brought out a key and placed it on the table. He sat back on his chair. Adon came back and saw her father lying dead. He began to cry, seeking help, even though it was too late. She raised her head and saw a single key on the table. She took it, and there was a tag written on it: "A secret gift awaits you in the secret room.” She took the key and hid it. After Mr. Emma's burial, Adon took the key and opened the secret room. She saw just a box lying in the middle of the room. She flipped the box open, as it was without a padlock. Her eyes were deeply opened for what she had seen.
"What!" she shouted. It was filled up with gold, and the second half was filled with silver. “How did my dad get all these?” She tried to ask herself.
She brought the box out and secretly took one piece of gold to a gold dealer. It was priced at a huge amount of money. She sold it and started a new life. Her mom saw that she was doing so fine and decided to come back.
"Mum, just leave me alone. You left when my dad was having issues, and now you are returning just because you have heard that I'm enjoying it. You just have to leave me alone. She began to beg, but then it was too late. The villagers and Emma's younger brother came begging Adon for money when they went broke. Still, then she replied to them, “My dad had tried giving what he had put to you all, but when he was sick, you turned your back on him. I carried his burden, and now he left a giant secret with me. You all should leave at once," she commanded.
Wow, what a nice story.
This story beautifully captures the themes of sacrifice, family loyalty, and betrayal. I look forward to more of your write-ups.
